I have a lifelong loathing of the Church and Saul was a bastard, but the historical significance of it is incredible. It is said that he addressed the assembly, so I just assumed it would be at the Pnyx. I admit I’m not certain.

The steps, the stars overhead, the giant Parthenon directly across from you… I don’t know a more magical spot in Athens.

When I lived in a tiny flat in Thission back in 2004, I loved nothing better than climbing up to the Pnyx at night, sitting on the giant stone steps and looking across at the Acropolis. It was truly awesome to consider that Pericles and St. Paul had addressed the Athenian assembly/ekklesia there.

I have Italian friends whose elderly Calabrian village grandparents spoke an archaic form of Greek. While traveling in the Peloponnese twenty years ago, I came across some folks who spoke Tsakonian which apparently derives from archaic Dorian. I couldn’t understand it.

My knowledge of Eastern Mediterranean history is strictly as an educated layperson. I’d definitely love to be in the audience but I cannot guarantee ahead of time that work won’t end up interfering on a Saturday morning (my time). I’d hate to commit then not be able to show.

It's foundational to my father’s sense of Greek governmental corruption. My father also never neglects to mention that Doxiades’ book on urban planning was/is taught at universities. He’s a big admirer. I admit to retelling his story on occasion. I’m curious as to your family’s take on its accuracy.

Christian Panas @taki.earth · 01/10/2026
Doxiades was your grandfather? My dad has told the tale my entire life (with maximal disgust) on how he offered post-war Athens a wonderful urban plan gratis to rebuild as a beautiful city that was ultimately rejected because there were no attendant bribes.

Like many things, maybe it doesn’t hit as hard as it did because so-called Real Life has caught-up and perhaps outpaced the movie’s conceipt. The RL actors we have feel as alien/monstrous as the film’s. More so in the case of Stephen Miller. Still an awesome popcorn watch which is totally worth it.

I can’t and won’t argue with the appreciation for B movies as well as Carpenter using them to get across the message. Love that fight.

Christian Panas @taki.earth · 01/10/2026
True enough. I didn’t mean to put down B movies. But They Live is very much political movie.

Christian Panas @taki.earth · 01/10/2026
This has been true FOREVER. It's been forgotten that the Times’ Judith Miller with intense Sulzberger support was one of the main forces lying us into invading Iraq and the debacle that cost us hundreds of thousands of deaths, trillions of dollars, and an even more destabilized Middle East. Fuck NYT

Christian Panas @taki.earth · 01/10/2026
They Live was 100% meant as commentary on the Reagan Years, not to be “just a B-movie.” John Carpenter made and makes no bones about his politics. No need to denigrate the movie to make a point.

Oh yeah, it makes complete sense. If it’s not an art book or something depending on physical format, I’ve been carrying most of my books in an e-reader for almost 15 years now. I cannot manage a library with the amount of moving I’ve done, although letting go of my books was the most difficult.

From what I have read about them, they reject AI-created and AI-translated comics and also make it plain that they have not taken venture capitalist cash or angel investments. I wish them much luck and will definitely give them a try for digital.

People think Catholic and Jewish guilt are the same but it's actually getting the arrow of causality wrong. Jewish Guilt: I need my kid to do a task, so I deploy guilt. Catholic Guilt: I need my kid to feel guilt, so I deploy a task.

Ah, I really loved those books, even if I think Cicero was much more of a reactionary bastard than Harris portrayed him.

Yeah, connected to that (and what I firmly admit to be a personal bugaboo for me) is the continuation of British-imposed latinized spellings of Greek names to this day. There was no C in Greek but there is a K in English. Why not Sokrates? And why -us instead of -os? It rubs me the wrong way.

I just finished listening to it. Definitely a comfort read/listen. My only complaint was that it was too short.

We remember poet, essayist, farmer, and environmentalist Wendell Berry, whose work called us toward deeper relationship with one another, the land, and the communities we share. May his words continue to inspire lives rooted in care, trust, and responsibility. #WendellBerry #UU #BelovedCommunity
Graphic memorializing Wendell Berry, August 5, 1934–August 31, 2026. Against a misty blue mountain background, a large cutout portrait of Berry appears at right, wearing glasses, a gray suit, white shirt, and tie. At left, white text reads: “A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other’s lives.” Attribution: “—Wendell Berry, The Long-Legged House.” The Unitarian Universalist Association logo appears at lower left and http://UUA.org at lower right. It’s such a profound truth that eases the world when I’ve been able to touch it. I feel so far away from it at the moment, though I “know” it’s always there to be accessed.

I just this moment discovered that Wendell Berry has passed. I feel such grief though he lived long and well. I don’t have it in me to find an essay or a poem right now, I just know the world has been made so much better by his existence and effort, and I’m trying to focus on that gratitude.

Fuck Pete Buttigieg, that neoliberal, consultant who shredded health care in Michigan, scourge of the homeless as mayor and sellout who torpedoed Sanders in return for his meaningless Sec Treasury position. He’s an empty sociopath who believes in nothing and would make a worthless nominee.
