Mijn hot take van de dag: wij Belgische historici moeten het narratief over de 80-Jarige Oorlog opnieuw een stuk durven claimen als ook onderdeel van onze geschiedenis. De opstand wordt nog te vaak enkel aan Nederland verbonden, maar ik zie dat er stilaan verandering in komt.

On this day 20 years ago, Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow, on Putin’s 54th birthday. She had spent years reporting on Putin’s Russia and exposing atrocities committed during Russia’s war in Chechnya. Dozens of journalists have been killed for their work under Putin.

Hoezo, Diependaele is ‘trots’ op de Nobelprijs voor fysica? Hij snoeit net 35 miljoen euro in wetenschappelijk onderzoek
Het is natuurlijk indrukwekkend dat een Vlaming, professor Francis Halzen uit Tienen, de Nobelprijs voor Fysica heeft gekregen. Het is ook terecht dat de KU Leuven, waar Halzen (weliswaar lang geleden) zijn volledige opleiding heeft genoten, daar een beetje fier op is. Maar het is ronduit pijnlijk dat ook Vlaams minister-president Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) op X verklaart “trots” te zijn op wat hij beschrijft als “Vlaamse wetenschap van wereldformaat”. Minder dan een week geleden heeft de regering die Diependaele (met enige moeite, zo lijkt het) leidt immers beslist om haar jaarlijkse steun aan het wetenschappelijke onderzoek in Vlaanderen met 35 miljoen euro te verminderen.
