On Monday, Switzerland is expected to reach Glacier Loss Day, one of the earliest ever recorded. By then, all this winter’s snow will have melted away. From that point on, every day of summer heat means the loss of ancient glacier ice, built up over centuries. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

#Skystorians, looking for examples of historical research where ‘the subject’ did not want to be studied, and/or tried to interfere with the study. Also looking for examples where individuals and communities minimized their role/agency in historical sources, interviews or their own curated history.

Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents. I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.

It's WAY overused these days, but Tolkien nailed it. "I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I found a book from 2014 on deconnection for 1 euro. Very entertaining: some predictions came true, other times the author was completely wrong (in retrospect). This passage made me close the book for a few minutes, and take a deep breath.
Highlighted text in 'the end of absence' (Michael Harris, 2014): "A large Pew Research Center survey fond that most people believe we'll see a mass adoption of distance learning by 2020, and many are wondering whether that will brush aside the sundappled campuses, shared coffees, and lawn lolling that pre-Internet students considered so essential to their twenty-something lives."

Picture from the book A Passion for History, by Natalie Zemon Davis, page 67.

Denis Crouzet asks: Do you defend history because you see it as a source of social or ethical utility, in the sense it could help orient us in history...

Natalie Zemon Davis: I was say 'useful' in a very special sense. What human beings have done in the past, in the enormous range in ways of living and possible actions, is a source both of hope and despair. How fascinating it is to consider this variety in human events. We can draw hope from it in the sense that if things have been different in the past, perhaps we're in a position to make them a little different today [laughter] -- at least a little bit different. When I say 'usefulness', I don't mean that history offers us models that we can apply -- the details of different situations are too unlike each other. History offers us ideas, points of view, perspectives, landmarks, indices, possibilities.

Ever wondered why walking around museums is weirdly tiring? At normal speed our legs act like pendulums, swinging forward from the hip & saving us a huge amount of energy. In "museum shuffle" our muscles must do ALL the work of constant readjustment. So cake in the cafe is scientifically justified 🥳
