Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Seeing people post about how unfair the “mob justice” against the Cornell rapists is doesn’t really move me when there is no justice for survivors. The system doesn’t work; it enacts further punishment on the victims. Society is even crueler. So spare me the “mob justice” rhetoric about the accused

Hubble Sees Galaxies Spiraling around Leo - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/nbxsKE
Shown here is a spiral galaxy known as NGC 3455, which lies some 65 million light-years away from us in the constellation of Leo (the Lion).

Galaxies are classified into different types according to their structure and appearance. This classification system is known as the Hubble Sequence, named after its creator Edwin Hubble.
In this image released 14, April, 2014, NGC 3455 is known as a type SB galaxy — a barred spiral. Barred spiral galaxies account for approximately two thirds of all spirals. Galaxies of this type appear to have a bar of stars slicing through the bulge of stars at their center. The SB classification is further sub-divided by the appearance of a galaxy's pinwheeling spiral arms; SBa types have more tightly wound arms, whereas SBc types have looser ones. SBb types, such as NGC 3455, lie in between.

NGC 3455 is part of a pair of galaxies — its partner, NGC 3454, lies out of frame. This cosmic duo belong to a group known as the NGC 3370 group, which is in turn one of the Leo II groups, a large collection of galaxies scattered some 30 million light-years to the right of the Virgo cluster.

This image is from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys.

‘What private company or government agency would have funded Einstein's seemingly bonkers ideas about general relativity’? Good letter in @economist.com from a UK scientist about why discovery research is critical and easy to undervalue economist.com/letters/2026...
Grading a science paper
Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House office of science, laid out his case for refocusing American science on harnessing AI and competing with China (By Invitation, August 15th). He showed a lack of
understanding of scientific research and the application of scientific breakthroughs. Mr Kratsios's advice was singularly focused on endeavours with predictable applications.
However, bureaucrats tasked with placing bets on the direction of scientific research would never have predicted or funded past revolutionary discoveries. Industry has not funded these fundamental scientific breakthroughs, and never will do.
Basic science involves research without an initially obvious application or with a time horizon that a private company would never stomach. Examples of such discoveries are endless. Genetic engineering would not exist without curious scientists investigating how bacteria thrive in hydrothermal vents. CRISPR-mediated genome editing stems from blue-skies research on how bacteria gain immunity to viruses. X-ray crystallography, which is essential for our understanding of protein folding and structure-guided drug design,The 2024 Nobel prize in chemistry for an understanding of protein-folding was not, as Mr Kratsios insists, "largely achieved through industry resources and talent". The training data behind these AI algorithms required many decades of x-ray crystal structures funded almost entirely by basic science-related government grants. These examples extend beyond biology.
What private company or government agency would have funded Einstein's seemingly bonkers ideas about general relativity with the hope of creating a global positioning system?
We need to ask ourselves what breakthroughs and their ultimate applications we will miss out on if we carry out this "overhaul" of science.
