Cover reveal! The keywords I sent the press were “historical,” “natural,” and “multimedia” and I’d say they nailed it. Featuring my (book’s) main man Humphry Repton on the left there. Coming from Yale University Press this fall.
Image of a book cover with the title The Book of Improvement, subtitle Media Landscapes in the Global Enlightenment, and author Rachael King. The cover features a tree in the center with two men with surveying equipment to the left of the trunk and two men reclining under an umbrella to the right of the trunk. There are a river and rolling hills in the background.

I loved Labyrinth so much but my mom had to put regular moratoriums on me making it my movie selection at the video rental store because of my consistent nightmares featuring these dudes
the fire gang, a group of maniac jim henson creatures that are a mixture of bird skulls, red feathers, eyes that have seen great horror, and in this case, conga line dancing

NO, NYC PUBLIC LIBRARIES ARE NOT "FULLY FUNDED" despite what the influencers on social media are regurgitating. Our libraries remain UNDER-FUNDED. Library workers need to be paid MORE MONEY, we need more funds for collections, we need more funds for programming & for capital expenses.

Ebenezer Millions is the antagonist of an ill-reviewed c19 instructional/moral novel. His cruelty towards Goodman Gentleheart and corruption of Chasity Almsgive was perceived by some as too on the nose. Also, yes, there are some questions about the amount of space given to describing EM's nose

I'll never understand how "a lot of mostly/potentially/probably incorrect metadata is better for digital discovery than accurate but sparse metadata" became a popular idea than "we will put things online more slowly, but we will do it with accuracy"

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵

So glad for Pat's leadership in the field and to see so many respected/trusted colleagues on the project team here- the nebulousness of "community-[?] archives" is made a little more solid here, but the report also makes me think about all the benefits and losses of honing memory into archive
Excerpt for the Mellon Foundation report on community-based archives, that says among other things that 61% of the survey participants do not call themselves community-based archives, and many don't identify as doing archival work

If 1 professional legacy I hope it'll be people knowing I will frown when they continue to host "archives" events without archivists. If 2 I hope it'll be professors knowing that archivists are often their intellectual equals. If I have 3 I hope it will be all the drawings I've made at conferences.
A drawing of me a small woman with glasses and an afro-bun, trapped in a jail of hollinger metal edge boxes. I have a powerful fist raised, and above me is written "solidarity from archives jail!" I drew this at SAA when they wouldn't let me sit with my friends because I was getting an awardThis is a drawing of me, a woman with glasses and arms in the air, a face of pure mania. Above me is written "I HAD TWO LATTES AHHHHH!" I drew this during a technical meeting where a bunch of men were ignoring my expertise for 8 hoursA drawing of a dog in a top hat and bow tie. He has a talk bubble that reads "I Love to Learn" and below him is written "history hounds." I do not remember what conference this was, but I know someone presenting said history hounds and I imagined a really smart dog

But fruit by the foot didn't exist in the 1800s?

Steven Pinker: Not as we currently think of it, no. But if you consider fruit that had dropped from trees and was literally by people's feet, the picture starts to become much clearer
