An unaccounted for part of the economy is how much young people virulently hate AI, despite how aggressively it's being forced on them. They realize it's making their friends dumber and ruining the world and they want nothing to do with it. From the Penn student paper: www.thedp.com/article/2026...
Goldman Sachs reports that 300 million full-time jobs could be replaced by AI by 2030. Labor turnover is high and hiring has slowed. 71% of Americans worry that AI will cause permanent job loss. As young people about to enter the workforce for the first time, the fear of unemployment is understandable, but we cannot save ourselves with the very tool that is putting us at risk.

The irony is that as Penn pours endless money and energy into AI advancement in its attempt to get ahead, the University is only quickening its own demise. AI cannot coexist with education — it can only degrade it. As technology advances and workers are replaced by machines, schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship.

Editorials represent the majority view of members of The Daily Pennsylvanian Editorial Board who meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to the Penn community. This body is led by Editorial Board Chair Jack Lakis and is entirely separate from the newsroom. Questions or comments should be directed to letters@thedp.com.

Taking linguistic/grammatical diversity in the world's languages 🌏 serious is important because a too narrow perspective on how language works (in the brain), based on a few and in the grand scheme quite similar languages — English, German, Dutch, … — will miss a big part of the picture. 🖼️ 🧵4/

What I like here is that the solution comes from the students themselves "multiple low-stakes attempts rather than single high-pressure performances, conversations rather than presentations, uncapped formative practice that builds confidence, and peer explanation normalised as a routine activity"

Let’s talk ✨constructive friction✨ in educational design! Yes, many students adopt AI as a rational response to assessment where thinking isn’t required for success @wonkhe.bsky.social But let’s talk about cases where friction makes something hard to do, and the by-product is learning! 🧵

I first realised I was aphantasic after a psych undergrad and a PhD in cognitive neuro (studying visual ST memory no less). I got in an argument in the pub with someone who has extremely vivid imagery. I kept saying, no you just think it’s visual in nature (😳) - it’s just a visual representation!

Is mental imagery a single process? Our meta-analysis of 46 fMRI studies suggests not. We find a key divide between object imagery (visualizing an object in rich detail) and spatial imagery (mentally transforming objects). This split mirrors the ventral and dorsal streams of vision

Star (shape) and Star (astronomical) are both welcome here. The imagery scale simply asks about how vivid the image is, rather than which kind sounds like you added rich details like solar flares that weren’t mentioned in the prompt, so that aligns best with the ✨ hyperphantasia ✨ end of the scale

I'm really bad. I have no static visual imagery in my head at all. I can see movement though. So if I think of how I would draw a star I can visualise a basic star being drawn. People always pop up on these discussions and say 'no one with aphantasia can be an artist' and yah sucks boo to those guys

There used to be a lot of arguments about that on art forums years ago! (I think before aphantasia became widely known?) It was always a hopeless shouting match between people who couldn’t see images in their mind insisting that those of us who could must be delusional and not really seeing things

I used to think I was the type who visualized fully in great detail. Recently, I realized that it’s more like a detailed image with blind spots, almost like I can’t “look” at the image directly, but can see it in the periphery or sometimes, conversely, like I’m scanning it through tunnel vision.

Once a year I ask my students to imagine a red star. It’s cognitive psychology and we are about to talk about whether “imagery” is the same or different from “perception”, but first, I like to check in on what our class experience when we imagine something. Friends, the results NEVER disappoint!
A digital pinboard showing six options. Ranging from 1. Nothing. 2. A vague outline with no/barely any colour. To 5. A vivid red star and 6. Something more elaborate. 35 people respond as “imagers” (Options 4-6). 6 people show aphantasia (Options 1-2), with one person selecting ‘nothing’.

In the comments section for “nothing”, someone has asked “hello one friend. How do you imagine things?” The reply says “I think of concepts (weepy-face) can’t see things in my mind”

It’s that time of year where we try to replicate a 140-year-old cognitive psychology experiment using nothing but 10 volunteers, a bell and a stopwatch! It’s Cognitive Psychology, the volunteers are students from the back row. How did it go on 2026? 10.0.23.196/m9.figshare....
What is the speed of thought: A live, low-tech demonstration of reaction-time and choice-cost.

Image of 10 people tapping the shoulder of the person in front of them. The one at the front holds a bell

THE GOAL: PASS THE SIGNAL TO THE BELL AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, BY TAPPING WHEN YOU FEEL A TAP ON YOUR SHOULDER.

‘BASIC’: THE RESPONSE CHAIN KNOWS WHICH SHOULDER THE TAP WILL BE ON, AND ALL TAP WITH THE SAME HAND.

‘CHOICE’ THE TAP COULD COME ON EITHER SHOULDER, AND ALL RESPONSES MUST BE MADE WITH THE OPPOSITE HAND.

THE RESULT: IT TAKES ABOUT *ONE SECOND MORE TIME* FOR THE REACTORS TO RING THE BELL IN THE ‘CHOICE’ CONDITION. THIS DEMONSTRATES THAT A SIMPLE CHOICE (RESPONSE HAND) TAKES EACH PERSON 1/10 OF A SECOND LONGER!

CONTEXT: DONDERS FIRST DEMONSTRATED ‘CHOICE-COST’ IN 1868, USING FLASHING LIGHTS AND RESPONSE BUTTONS.

DEMO BY: SUZY J STYLES

Screenshots of TANGO-CC trials. In Training 1, an agent looks at a balloon that falls to the ground, and participants have to respond by clicking/touching the balloon. In Training 2, the balloon falls behind the hedge while its flight is still visible. Participants respond by clicking the hedge where they think the balloon is. In test trials, the balloon’s movement and final position are covered by a hedge, and participants respond by clicking the hedge. In the task, all movements are smoothly animated (no still pictures). Yellow frames indicate the time point when participants respond (only illustrative, not shown during the task).
