Agree. Bryan Stevenson said it best. It’s not about whether someone deserves to die. It’s about whether we as a society deserve to kill.

I completely agree, but it's also insane how incredibly impractical it is. As a country, we want to kill people so bad that we throw hundreds of millions of dollars away each year to kill 25ish people.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

What irritates me most about the "covid is no big deal" crowd is that there's growing evidence that unexplained neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's are actually caused, at least in part, by repeated exposure to viral pathogens over a lifetime.

Some light reading for folks who think getting sick a few times a year is no big deal. It's no big deal each individual time, but one chicken pox, 100 colds, a dozen influenzas, some RSV and a handful of covids over a lifetime apparently shreds your nervous system. Something to keep in mind.

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights** Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight.
From meteorologist Eric Snitil

**Lights Out Alert Sunday & Monday Nights**

"Heads up birders, I would not be surprised if the biggest bird migration night of the year happens over the next 2 nights. Birdcast is estimating 300-400 million birds will be in flight. That is a lot, but the pattern could not be better for migratory birds. A massive area of high pressure will turn the low level winds from the northeast to the southwest across most of the US. The last time we had anything similar to this in the fall was early October last year when a record 1.25 billion birds were in flight. I doubt we get to that level, but I suspect the number will top 500 million especially Monday night which looks to be the bigger of the two nights. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights on big migration nights, and the next 2 nights is about as big as it gets."

Am becoming impatient with this. The Kennedy Center is also a huge, vibrant, varied site for culture in Washington, DC, where many people LIVE! It is not JUST a symbol. It employs people. Lots of performers…perform. Anyone might see their very first play, or their hundredth, at The Kennedy Center!

The connection between the people who actually live in DC and the Kennedy Center is something that outsiders don't understand. Kids learn to walk down those long softly carpeted halls. There is _always_ some kind of free performance. And the hottest December ticket in town is the sing-along Messiah

It's the free stuff, the experimental stuff, the "here's a Kazoo that your kid can use to play along with Yo Yo Ma on for an hour on Thursday" stuff. And yeah... the long soft hallways and that epic river view. And the crowd at those events does not look the same as the NSO gala.

But the access to this sort of culture, in a town of less than 1M, was extraordinary. That's what sets the KC apart. Yeah, it puts on high-dollar events that are once-a-year or once-a-lifetime events for the audience that can afford it. But that's not what it does most or best.
