I can't help but think of the parallels w/ the antebellum US. Many northerners were ambivalent about slavery but were driven to anti-slavery b/c of southern over-reaction, in particular its attacks on the free speech of northern anti-slavery activists.

It's depressing, but my impression is that most people will almost only ever act if they feel that they are or might be harmed by something. I study slavery, and, to me, that's the lesson of American antislavery: a core of principled moralists and a mass of people who think slavery will hurt them.

I don’t know the answer to the specific question “does CUNY want research?” but I think the policy consensus among Dems and Dem-coded groups is that most of higher ed should do less research (which is read as status of vanity) and focus more on teaching and student success, ROI, etc.

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.
