As an undergrad, I RA'd in a genomics lab working with nematodes. My training could have been ... better. For months I pulled PCR tubes out of lab's central storage boxes with bare hands until a horrified lab technician pointed out that other groups using those tubes sequence human DNA.

#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

On a walk at lunch, popped into a charity store. Was thinking about needing a nice blazer for teaching. Found something 100% cotton, clearly never worn, for £45. Walked to the local seamstress to have the sleeves tailored. She revealed the blazer is easily worth £400. Farrkk! I got lucky today!
