There’s an article to be written about how this scandal arose because of owners that come from a feudal dictatorship without the rule of law or an independent judiciary

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

FUN FACT: The reason we sell petrol by the litre but measure performance by mpg is because in the 1970s oil shock, British pumps had exactly the same issue and it was easier to put stickers over the word "gallon" rather than retrofitting all the dials.

Honestly the thing I’ve found oddest about that interview and the Beeb’s whole framing in general is the insistence on framing it as an internal Labour party disputes thing. Canada and vast chunks of the EU doing the same don’t get a mention.

Like, this is objectively not what the disclosure rules are for and it is quite apparent Johnson knows it.
“Basically, the way that that worked… Dan [Jukes] gave me a call and said, look we want to do this polling of councils to show X. Can you guys do this? Gave him three options of quotes. Came back, asked for a slightly bespoke thing, we came back and then we just went and did it. Kept him in the loop”.

There is no suggestion that Johnson broke the law. But he told William that concealing the poll’s origin was a breach of British Polling Council rules, the voluntary body that regulates the industry. “I think that there is a little bit of like informal rule bending that we did with our last one. When we published those results, we should have disclosed who the client was”.

“We said the client was The Telegraph. And The Telegraph doesn’t care because they love the fact that they can say this is our poll.”

He explained that he didn’t mind The Telegraph claiming the poll as their own “because it looks like media people are commissioning it”.

When William asked if that was preferable to the journalists reporting that the poll was commissioned by Dan Jukes, Johnson replied: “Yeah, well indeed. And that's never going to happen, because we'd never let that happen”.Polling of local authorities...as covered in the Telegraph

Big stakes now for both parties. Greens have chances to turn the tide on recent decline and demonstrate Polanski is a winner. Labour have a chance to show the Burnham bounce is real, consolidate the left in a London heartland seat, and deal a potential knockout blow to Green insurgency.

From what I can see, even if Zack runs and loses, as long as he makes it a genuinely competitive race that's still better than not running. If he loses narrowly (or much better wins) that's still better than not trying. The risk is if he ends up miles behind and I think it's worth taking

Big test for both Burnham and the Greens. Burnham is hoping to unite the left and neutralise the Greens - some evidence that's happening in the polls. For the Greens this could be a test of whether they've already peaked. And if Polanski doesn't run, he'll be accused of bottling it.
