Now for a less diplomatic point: it is high time to stop humoring the bigoted beliefs of groups about other groups (because that is exactly what is going on here, "Jews are an artificially united construct" is not a randomly acquired bit of crankery, it is the hallmark of Middle Eastern antisemitism

I’m working on a lecture about Yehudah Halevi this week. Medieval Jewish philosopher & poet who wrote Hebrew verse & moved to Palestine at the end of his life. I’ve had to spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time tailoring my lecture to defuse misleading political narratives, both zionist & anti-zionist.

Of course they can do that. And then President Trump can veto anything they pass that he does not like. Because the funding does not expire until September 2029, anything that is unspent as of January 21, 2029 could be rescinded quickly if a Dem retakes the presidency.

They're holding up a major escalation in Iran and a crackdown on abortion until after the midterms to limit political damage. To the extent that the last two years have been a right-wing smash-and-grab operation, the next two will be worse.

There are copious sources one can read on this if one is interested in knowing something about another culture rather than simply painting an image of it that matches one's own concept of evil, frequently obtained from looking in a mirror and noticing what one doesn't like about themselves

I have been getting more and more bothered by the fact that large numbers of non-Jews ID as "anti-Zionist". Pro-Palestinian, anti-Nationalist, great! But why is opposition to *Jewish* nationalism part of your goyisch identity?

I live next door to two day care centers. One is religious Jewish. The other completely secular. The Jewish one always has a security guard. The secular one doesn't. Being forced to budget for staffing security is pretty clearly systemic antisemitism.

I do think that ‘Hi-def video of horrible shit’ is our generation’s version of smoking or leaded gasoline tbh. As in it’s something that future generations will look back on and be appalled that we thought it was ok to have as an environmental hazard.

the thing is that no you /don't/ need to understand the history of the Jewish and Palestinian peoples to know that what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is wrong /right now/ but you probably DO need to shut up on anything before oslo if you don't understand said history

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

Or to reduce this to a pithy one-liner because that's what The Youngs understand these days: Instead of *ending* the I/P sectarian conflict, a growing portion of the left now want "the right people" to WIN it.

Liberals of my generation believed that you couldn't win a sectarian conflict. Increasingly, the left has decided no, you totally can and it's based actually.

This needs to be discussed more, imo: one of the greatest successes of the pro-Palestinian radical fringe has been to convince people mutual understanding or a view of the I/P conflict as a sectarian conflict are "hasbara," & to immediately reject it in favor of the Palestinian perspective.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

So they say antisemitism isn’t “structural,” which appears to be true at least insofar as average life outcomes are concerned (wealth, health, education etc). But at the level of thought, it is absolutely structuring and continues to be so.

In general there is an inability to recognize that parties to the Gaza war had agency & acted on it. One of the things the Atlantic article makes clear is that Hamas kept backing out of ceasefire agreements because Sinwar believed prolonging the war would drive a wedge in the US/Israeli alliance.
