Prolly deleting this soon, but: I wish a single other person gave a shit about me. It’s ALWAYS me reaching out, putting myself out there. No one reaches out to me, or thinks of me at all unless I impose myself, & if I impose myself, I become an annoyance. I’m really lonely, ya know? #Autistic

I try not to “hey this is awful check it out” quote post but this really won’t leave my brain alone. There’s nothing bad or evil or colonialist about Jews around the world speaking Hebrew. Or Hebrew’s punctuation.

I’m choosing to focus on his fusion of piyyut & Arabic style. This is a Convivencia class. The other students are by now relatively familiar with the features of Arabic verse. They are primed to see Halevi as merely mimicking.

I’m working on a lecture about Yehudah Halevi this week. Medieval Jewish philosopher & poet who wrote Hebrew verse & moved to Palestine at the end of his life. I’ve had to spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time tailoring my lecture to defuse misleading political narratives, both zionist & anti-zionist.

Remember the reason for the season! Keep the Boo! in Hoyshane Raboo!
A scan of a woodcut depicting a man in 16th century dress holding a bunch of willow twigs (for ritual use on Hoshana Rabbah, the seventh day of Sukkot) under the crescent moon (with a face) facing a shadow form of himself, but headless - showing the folk belief that the night of Hoshana Rabbah predicts one's fate in the coming year, in one's moonlight shadow

What is Hosha'na Rabba? A thread of indeterminate length. Before we begin, a forewarning: I would like to avoid being the XKCD expert familiarity guy, so if there is anything I bring up which you do not understand and would like to, feel free to ask. It's a weird day with a lot going on
"Hoshana Rabba is second nature to us liturgists, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows Kol Mevasser and the Yamim Noraim additions."
"And cabbage, of course."
"Of course."

Even when they're trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their field.

A thought about rigor in education that is applicable more broadly: rather than lowering expectations because everyone is struggling to exist, we need to make it easier to just exist so that students are better able to tackle schoolwork with intellectual rigor.

When you read what actually happened, a human being used a computer (trained on documents archived by human Yiddish scholars) to help translate letters. This is framed as “No one can afford to hire a human translator, thank God we now have AI!”

Rachel @rachelneedsanap.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The Yiddish DID survive. Human beings kept it alive, & are STILL NEEDED to understand it! Unfortunately, because people perceive AI as magic, the experts who have this knowledge are losing their jobs, & we aren’t training a new generation to replace them. I can only hope the bubble pops soon.
“Gurbych’s computer cannot replace the people who once spoke the language. In Trueblood’s case, he did more than run pages through a machine. His knowledge of Jewish history and religion allowed him to explain biblical references, religious language and historical details that the computer alone could not provide. The artificial intelligence cracked open the door, but somebody still had to understand what was on the other side.”

Some beautiful but unintended irony in how news outlets are sharing the “AI is helping uncover Yiddish history” story with AI-generated photographs of people who never existed and a letter written in gibberish that is supposed to pass as Yiddish
AI generated image of two hands holding a letter written completely in gibberish, with a photograph of a family that never existed, in front of a laptop with even more gibberish

People often miss this. Antisemitism may not be structural in the US today in the way anti-Blackness is, but overcoming the legalism of Judaism for the spirit of love of Christianity is the ur-narrative for so much left politics in the culturally Christian world. We need to guard against it.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

We went and found the Lego sukkah. It’s in Oak Park, MI, and it was built by Menachem R., with help from his nieces and nephews. During the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, you build a booth and eat meals outside in it. They’re usually made of wood but he got funky with this one!
Twilight photo of a colorful sukkah built out of giant Lego blocks of every color, with a wooden roof with branches across the top. It has an open weave pattern of blocks, with larger openings at the top.
There is a door on one side. It sits in the driveway of a suburban yard.Color photo of the back of a sukkah built out of giant Lego blocks, sitting in a suburban driveway. It is intensely colorful, with different colors of blocks mingled all together. In some sections there are patterns and in others it is more random.

We all deserve a world we want to live in, and I hope one day we can have that. At least for me, that's the best suicide prevention- fighting for a world where our needs are met and where we feel responsibility for each other's wellbeing. ...It'd also help not to be talked about as if subhuman.

So they say antisemitism isn’t “structural,” which appears to be true at least insofar as average life outcomes are concerned (wealth, health, education etc). But at the level of thought, it is absolutely structuring and continues to be so.

apropos of this latest round I will just mention that there has been antisemitism on the left since the beginning. the people who invented anticapitalism did so in an environment in which Judaism had been equated with bad economic practices for 600 years already. AND they didn’t know any Jews
