based on this blog post by the author of the book, her argument really is about punctuation and not about diacritical vowel markers. it’s literally an argument that the different directions European punctuation marks face when adopted in Hebrew vs. Arabic mindthegap1.substack.com/p/double-edg...

i have some questions
Hazrat's book is a history of punctuation—or some punctuation, since it barely mentions the apostrophe, the serial comma, or quotation marks. "On the Mark" is a "the X that changed the world" book, which is a popular genre. Its claim is that "the history of punctuation is the history of humanity."

This ambition inevitably leads to overreach. If punctuation played a role in everything, what about, say, the war in Gaza? Hazrat finds a link. "Punctuation marks in Hebrew," she explains, "are relics of a brutal colonial system that is far from over." Adding punctuation turned Hebrew into a spoken language, "paving the way for an artificial sense of unity among Jewish people from all over the globe, encouraging them to move to the land that already had people—a people made to suffer and bear the brunt of European anti-Semitism in the most horrendous ways for generations. " It seems (the reason is not altogether clear) that, had Yiddish been the official language of Israel, atrocities might have been avoided.

The fact that this idiocy got past an editor in a book on godamn punctuation shows how deep the ignorance of Judaism and Jewish history is in the wider culture and how that ignorance is being weaponized so as to create a better scapegoat for Western uses

I want to congratulate the people in front of me in the security line for their very first time ever being at an airport! What a treat to see their excited faces as they gazed in wonder at the concept of "putting a backpack onto a conveyor belt" and "going through a metal detector"

I think this piece from @theautisticcoach.bsky.social @autisticrabbi.bsky.social says some of the most important stuff about Judaism's future possibilities. Read the whole thing by backing our Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/ben...
"[Mordecai] Kaplan’s Judaism refuses assimilation. It was grounded in peoplehood, in communal creativity, and in the lived, complex reality of being Jewish in the Diaspora."
"And critically, this meant placing community - not belief, not ritual, not law - at the centre of Jewish religious life."

"We live in troubled times, with war a constant state of the world. With failing governmental structures and questions about the world’s ongoing habitability, questions of the eschatological end times easily arise."

real friendships involve the other person pushing back against you, having needs, being busy, not being able to devote themselves to you. we know from the experience of the powerful that having somebody at your literal beck and call is a factor in driving people mad.

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

open.substack.com/pub/misfitto... I wrote this about a month ago, and I do recommend the experience of writing something, not immediately hitting publish, but sitting with it for a while, playing with it and polishing it.
We had only heard the first two commands directly, and, terrified by the all consuming fire of the God who destroys all forms, retreated away from the anxiety and terror of the second command, away from formlessness and lack of identity, into our comfortable understanding of the first command, that God was the one who took us out of Egypt and put gold in our pockets.

We did not realize, chose not to realize, YHWH is not just the God who took us out of Egypt, the mold we had poured the gold into, YHWH was, more fundamentally, more primally, the fire. And fire cannot be molded, cannot be formed, and has a way of eluding human control, turning against those who would imagine themselves to be its owners, blazing out of control and breaking past its boundaries, burning those who would get too close, who do not respect its danger by distancing themselves.

Perhaps that’s why you acted like you did, when she died, you, unstable as water, went up to your father’s bed, the very bed she and your mother had used your gift as a bargaining chip for, what an insult it must have been to you that the gift you had brought her in from the fields had been traded for a privilege that she, it turns out, was actually third in line for, behind a maidservant, one last attempt from beyond the grave to avenge herself upon you for having the temerity to be born. You broke your banks, you flooded, you drowned, you failed, you were rejected.

And you must have cried a great and bitter cry.

Have you but a single blessing, father? Bless me, me also, Father!

Is that why they call him Yaakov?
