Its so important people distinguish between: a) Trump's politics are popular; and b) Trump is in office because of institutional capture and capitulation The right in Britain really needs to understand how unpopular he is, and how particular the institutional story is.

3rd PhD baby is out in the world 🎉 Voting far right because your region is left-behind? Not necessarily. "Left-behind" regions — slower growth, higher unemployment, industrial decline — are said to drive votes for the radical right. My new paper in @actapolitica.bsky.social complicates this story.

The old East–West divide is fading. Berlin’s electoral map is now clearly structured by a center–periphery divide: inside the S-Bahn Ring—the circular urban rail line surrounding central Berlin—the left camp dominates. Support for the right bloc rises with distance from the center. (1/2)

Die Linke pulled off a surprise win in Germany’s most recent federal election and has suddenly become one of the most closely watched parties in Europe’s progressive politics. Behind the success lies a continuing structural transformation of its geographic support base. A short thread🧵

It's so utterly unnecessary, and part of a whole pattern of gaffes and clumsiness. Zelensky did not have to name the unit after UPA. Nawrocki did not have to get into a snit. (Cf the trucking debacle, U flooding P with grain 3 weeks before the 2023 election, P now ending free refugee housing, etc)

I hate to break it to the European diplomat quoted in @politico.eu this morning, but increasing the return rate will make no difference to the far right. They will just move on to demanding forced remigration. It’s not like there aren’t hundreds of examples of this already.
What Macron's really worried about: The French president's intervention was partly motivated by concern the EU's migration debate may be swerving into unpleasant places.
Footage from the European Parliament after the regulation was approved showed far-right MEPs chanting "Send them back!" while left-wing lawmakers shouted "Shame on you!"
Pushback: The first diplomat, who hails from a country backing the return centers, said: "We have a return rate of less than 30 percent. Unless you can improve on that ... the far-right will gain even more support."

Image showing the abstract of the paper "Self-Fulfilling Prophecies at the Voting Booth" by Werner Krause and Christina Gahn, published in the Journal of Politics. The abstract describes a quasi-experimental study across 25 countries finding that parties polling just below electoral thresholds are approximately 45 percentage points less likely to clear them, and that this effect diminishes when voters are informed about polling uncertainty.
