🍂🌞 23 Celsius on 2nd October in Poland means people in tank tops and shorts share a reality with senior citizens who have broken out their fur coats, woollen hats and gloves. (Yes, BlueSky, I know that elderly people feel temperatures differently from eldritch millennials)

🇵🇱⚖️⛽🦹‍♂️ Two events in Poland that are primarily about something entirely else but also about the ongoing instrumentalisation of constitutional law - the story of fugitive former deputy MoJ Romanowski and a court granting him safe passage, and the windfall tax and President Nawrocki's sudden 180 on it.

🇪🇺 Having endured my share of aggravating "not border checks" courtesy of DE/PL law enforcement, I wholeheartedly support this action by @alemanno.bsky.social and his team, with support from luminaries of EU law. Schengen is meaningless if you need to pass the "white/not white" test along the way.

No, that is not the difference at all. The difference is that Poland and Russia had and have radically different political and social cultures, which led to radically different behaviours and policies. They were both countries with agency, not puppets of external forces.

Tony Blair rejoins the growing voices of those calling for an abandonment of Labour EU red lines and reversing Brexit. But in a symbol of all that was wrong with the Remain campaign, he does so saying the UK should only rejoin if its demands on EU reform are met 🧐
So, this is not about rerunning the debates of 2016 but taking a new approach rooted in the reality of 2026.

There is no point in inching towards Europe as we feel what British public opinion might accommodate. We should be clear that we want back into a formal relationship with the EU. But it must be a Europe on a credible path to reform, a Europe of nation states, a Europe capable of being a genuine global power. Otherwise, though Britain should continue to cooperate with the EU where it is in our mutual interest to do so, and though we should always remain open to changing circumstances, Britain will show that it can and is prepared to remain independent.

Tony Blair, Executive Chairman
