The graph shows how the various parties have been polling in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since the last regional election. While the SPD has seen a surge in the polls over the last month, the CDU has been steadily losing support.

Reading: Why is AfD strong in eastern Germany?
This 2020 article in PQ by Manes Weisskircher reviews the research on why the far right is strong in eastern Germany. The answer is multi-faceted. There is the reality of economic decline, particularly for those of working age since the welfare state gives people past retirement age an income on which they can live easily -worth noting that in the Saxony-Anhalt results yesterday, the older voter cohorts, past retirement age, were more likely to vote CDU than AfD, despite the CDU's terrible showing in the region.

How Place-Based Policy Could Counter Populist Discontent

Gerry Stoker, Daisy Blackburn, Nick Clarke, Will Jennings

Resentment felt by people in areas that have suffered from social and economic decline is a significant driver of populist backlash—‘the revenge of the places that don't matter’. An effective place-based strategy could provide something of an antidote to populist discontent. In power, populist leaders are arch-centralisers, organising government to dance to their tune. By focusing on place, UK government can respond to people's feelings of being neglected by Westminster and give them the power and tools to tackle issues that matter to their community. Drawing on a survey conducted in England in 2025, we show that, although place-based grievance is widespread, people still express pride in place and see unfulfilled potential, while negative perceptions reflect the material condition of local areas. There is demand for state intervention, but little faith in the ability of central government to deliver. In response, a place-based strategy requires a new style of multilevel governance followed by a slower, more place-sensitive push towards devolved government.

Which city/district councils have live streams of their meeting and can they serve as a data source for political scientists? Do politicians behave differently when they are on a live stream? Find out in the open access research note by Paul Reimers (in German) doi.org/10.1007/s11615-026-00672-8

Bridging the Gap? Liveübertragungen in Kreistagen und Stadträten als Datengrundlage für die politikwissenschaftliche Forschung - Politische Vierteljahresschrift
The scarcity of meeting minutes makes it difficult to analyze the working methods of local political bodies and the behavior of the actors involved. The increasing availability of livestreams and video recordings of district and city council meetings is helping to remedy this situation. Combined with technical innovations for extracting and processing large (multimodal) datasets, this availability enables new perspectives for local political research. However, for this wealth of data to be widely used, it must be generalizable to the broader population of local government bodies. Accordingly, questions arise regarding whether districts and cities that offer livestreams and recordings differ systematically from those that do not and whether these broadcasts induce shifts in local political debates. To this end, based on systematic research and a survey of district council members, this study describes the legal, political, and financial framework for introducing such recordings and examines the resulting influence on speakers’ behavior. Meeting recordings are available, particularly in large cities, but have so far been scarce in districts with low population density; furthermore, significant differences exist among the federal states. The survey indicates that adjustments to expanded public visibility of meetings are also occurring at the local level. Thus, the external validity of meeting recordings as a data source is not yet established, which should be taken into account during research design and case selection.
