Timeline cleanse with perhaps the most iconic Swiss name for a tiny village section that nevertheless gets its own bus stop: “Cheese and Bread“ 🇨🇭🧀🥖 Or, its official name in Swiss German: “Chäs und Brot” (“Käse und Brot” in standard German)

Today, Brazilian voters head to the polls to elect a new president. A fitting occasion to remind us Europeans how concentrated presidentialism is in the Americas & to (re-)read Linz’s seminal “The Perils of Presidentialism.” (I created this map for my lecture, using Anckar/Fredriksson's cool data)

Switzerland is known as the country where language groups live together peacefully. Inside 🇨🇭, it's less tidy: The regions aren't even having the same conversation. Case in point: Does Parmelin's seat belong to the French-speaking minority? Depends entirely on which side of the country you ask👇

BIG NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY THAT IS TOO SMALL TO MAKE NEWS: Guy Parmelin, member of the Swiss Federal Council and one of the more moderate figures in the right-wing SVP, resigns If he does, he could be one of the last, perhaps the last, relatively less hard-line SVP figures to leave the federal govt

This term, I’m teaching a big intro lecture for 1st year undergrads for the 1st time. Today: Why do institutions differ across countries? Swiss politics offers a nice illustration of path dependence: I.'s like the "Ständemehr" created in a particular historical context become deeply entrenched

The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

🇨🇭🇪🇺 This decision was expected: The Swiss upper house is dominated by mainstream-right and conservative parties, and MPs there were heavily lobbied. But the decision is *not* final. The lower house will decide in December, and a majority there may oppose requiring a double majority in the referendum

The Swiss People’s Party SVP is one of the oldest and electorally strongest radical-right parties in the world. But: electoral popularity ≠ policy popularity Voters keep supporting the SVP in elections, but only 2 out of 12 popular initiatives launched by the SVP have passed Data: Swissvotes

Some Swiss direct democracy voting days have the world watching, with all eyes on the nationwide ballots. Remember the 10M population cap in June? Today, both national ballots will be rejected. So many zoom in on the cantonal level: Geneva, for example, is voting on free contraception for all

What is direct democracy, essentially? For us in Switzerland, it means very frequent voting: ≈9 federal ballot measures per year, plus a large volume of cantonal and local votes. But it also means a practical challenge: who can open the voting envelope without tearing it apart? Always a tricky one

Many think Swiss direct democracy means citizens decide by adopting what is on the ballot. Yet <10% of pop initiatives pass. Indirect effects matter more: they pressure elites to act before voters vote. Today's ex.: a counterproposal to the Inclusion Initiative to strengthen disability equality
