Eric Schmitt's basketball fuckup yesterday is getting all the attention but I think it's really, really important to understand it in the context of the strategy and goals of the hearing as a whole, which was as clear an example as I can find of why the GOP is an existential threat to the Republic.

*I wonder if it's the native aesthetic of slop-video that it should always be extremely pretty and hypnotically-detailed, while also lacking individual human subjectivity, and avoiding divisive or upsetting stances or statements *Like a cinematic auteur-theory that is also intensely sycophantic

If we get a blue wave, the hard part starts in November. If things go well, we will have to work harder and be more tenacious holding balls to the fire than ever before. We cannot afford to be asleep at the wheel at this moment, the season of breaking curses. There are so many curses yet to break.

He more than likely doesn't give a shit. He's of the class who believes soldiers' jobs are to die, so why praise them for that? Trump heads a demographic of deeply disturbed individuals. He probably was more interested in updating & expanding his exclusive Trump brand trademarks Xi allowed in 2016.

Note to Democrats: theft of the public's money is what you would call a "kitchen table" issue. If someone broke into my house, took my money, and then gave it to people convicted of crimes, I would not only talk about that at the kitchen table, it would alter the very fabric of my existence.

It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.

We can wish things were different, but that ship has sailed, and is largely our fault. We broke the JPCOA. We attacked them at the behest of Israel. We attacked Venezuela during negotiations. We then attacked Iran in negotiations.

I think the Iraq war (2003 ed) left people in the USA with a maladaptive idea of what terminating a war looks like. The USA can leave Hormuz when Iran allows it to leave, or it can suffer a strategic defeat unlike any in its history

The reason we should actually crack down hard on racist agitators, and yes, using the force of the state, with the courts, and the police, and power, is not because it can cure racists from being racist. I don't know what can. I don't care! You shouldn't be allowed to say and do these things

Another thought on this. If the Democrats do win some statewide elections, I hope they won't mistake it for a sea change. It's a respite. The GOP will pull every lever to return to power, and most voters will want them to. Democrats get one shot at this or it's back to the wilderness. Govern well.

Democrats are well positioned to inherit power thanks to disgust with Trump, but ultimately none of this is about what Dems did in response to Trump. They mostly capitulated and are benefiting from being the other party in a two party system, I don’t have any positive expectations for them.

Take, for instance, migration. It is in my opinion a disaster that it is becoming rarer and rarer for someone to just stand up and say that fundamentally they believe in sheltering the wretched of the Earth, that it is a duty we have to each other because of our common humanity.

Democrats currently win elections when people are so angry and frightened by what Republicans are doing that they take a chance on a party they neither like nor trust. Ask yourself: Is that likely to lead to broad popularity and a mandate for Democratic priorities?
