Gender-bending in Balkan history and folklore: Sworn virgins, ritual roles and women warriors in drag
In the Balkans, tradition is often deemed to be fixed and patriarchal. Yet the region’s history, folklore and popular memory contain more complicated examples of the fluidity of gender roles.

We report: feels like late August, yellow grass along the roads, and fair weather clouds sweeping the sky. Our expert finds flowers of early summer in the undergrowth; on the banks of the streams, in the shadows of the willows and the oaks. The afternoon is too long for August.
Digital painting of a countryside landscape, rows of trees arranged around hilly fields. The sky is bright blue, with cottony white clouds living mostly in its bottom third.

You meet such interesting characters when you are church-crawling. Forgotten saints, petrified pilgrims. In stones that feel sacred to some, I find a sense of ghost-homes. I can't help but expect some of them to start speaking in long ache for conversation. – #MattAdams #Churchcrawling

Line-crossing ceremony onboard the ship København, 1925-28
This image captures a sailor participating in a traditional "Line-Crossing" ceremony, a nautical ritual held when a ship crosses the equator.
The figure is dressed as "King Neptune," the mythological ruler of the sea who traditionally presides over these initiations.
The costume features a distinct pointed hat emblazoned with a skull and crossbones, a common theme for such maritime celebrations.

The oldest known instance of the "Cool S", a symbol of unknown origin, on a tenth century Viking runestone. This sigil has persisted through the centuries and is still found today. Scholars believe its origin is unrelated to the letter S, and that it may have originally been part of a ritual.

Lynda Barry did not squeeze your heart and simultaneously explain the point of all art with the barest of line drawings so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."
HOW TO LOOK AT ART by Lynda Barry

In the first panel, a dog-headed woman, a mother, looks at a painting in the "Madonna with Baby Jesus" vein. A small blobby child is standing next to her.

Mother: IM NOT SURE HOW TO LOOK AT ART.
Child: WHATS SPOSTA HAPPEN?

In the second panel the dog-headed mother holds up her hands (paws?) trying to explain to the child.

Mother: SOMETHING BIG. A REVELATION.
SUDDENLY YOU JUST UNDERSTAND.

In the third panel dog-headed mother goes back to looking at the painting. The child holds up their arms to be lifted.

Mother: NOT SURE HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Child: HOW BOUT LIFT ME UP SO I CAN SEE BETTER

In the last panel, the dog-headed mother is holding the child, their position mirrored by the Madonna and baby Jesus in the painting.

For me, everything is about the writing. I keep writing because I’m addicted to being human, and I feel most alive when I’m writing. Why would I ever trade that for something which bypasses the most transformative part of the process? I write to live. I don’t want a machine to do it for me.

We report: the rain is long gone, and the storm is miles and miles away now, which is the only way we can see it in its full expanse. There are still echoes of thunder over the hills; the storm cell is still developing outwards, and we can clearly see the wall of rain beneath.
Digital painting of a large storm cell in a dark blue sky: the cell has a bubbling, cauliflower-like core, with a long, developing anvil structure over it. The lighting is yellowish, dramatic.

In a Public Notice released on April 22, 2026, the FCC is asking Americans to submit comments about whether the TV Oversight Management Board (TVOMB) should create new TV ratings to alert viewers to "transgender and gender non-binary programming" and "the discussion or promotion of gender identity themes."
