on this day in 1958, nasa officially launched operations!! since then, its sent man to the moon, sent spacecraft beyond our home planet, sent robots to the surface of mars, and there’s still so much more to come. space science is important and worth funding.

This is a cool photo of Venus! Photographed through the rings of Saturn.
A complex, curving pattern of lines that make up Saturn's vast ring system, in various gold and grey hues. The white arc at right is the limb of the planet itself. A tiny point of light is just upper right of centre.

HUBBLE VS. JWST!!! 🌌 these are images of the SAME galaxy cluster taken more than a decade apart. look at how many more galaxies webb reveals… THIS IS INSANE 😭
A Hubble Space Telescope view of galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300. Against a mostly black background, dozens of small yellow, white, and bluish galaxies are scattered across the field, with a few bright foreground stars showing diffraction spikes.A James Webb Space Telescope view of the same galaxy cluster, packed with hundreds of galaxies in white, gold, orange, and blue. Bright foreground stars have prominent diffraction spikes, while stretched orange arcs and distorted galaxy shapes reveal gravitational lensing around the cluster.

trying to remind myself that things not working out the way i originally planned might be a blessing in disguise, but it’s HARD when it seems like i worked so hard and failed. i can’t help but blame myself. i need prayers from everyone, and any advice on failure and setbacks.

NEW JWST IMAGE SHOWING GRAVITATIONAL LENSING!! 🌌 gravity bends and magnifies light from galaxies behind massive objects, sometimes making the same galaxy appear over 4 times! jwst found this happening TWICE in one cluster, for the first time!
A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the center. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's center; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in color; bright, nearby stars are the same color.

stars don’t stop being beautiful even when they’re falling apart
This image of the Ring Nebula appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements.A vivid Hubble image of the Cat’s Eye Nebula, showing a bright blue-green central region surrounded by intricate concentric shells, loops, and wisps of glowing gas in turquoise, pink, and orange. The layered structure gives the nebula a complex, almost eye-like appearance.Webb’s view of the Southern Ring Nebula appears as a misshapen oval that is slightly angled from the top left to the bottom right. The image shows one star at the center. A large translucent pink-and-red irregular oval surrounds the central stars.A Hubble image of the Butterfly Nebula, with two enormous wing-shaped lobes of glowing gas extending outward from a bright central star. The lobes are filled with fiery orange, red, pink, and blue clouds, while a dark band of dust cuts through the center.

ROMAN’S FIRST TEST IMAGE IS HERE!!!
This test image captures the very first photons of starlight to reach the Wide Field Instrument on NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. It was taken as an initial performance assessment with the detector array still stowed as it was for launch, far from best focus. Roman’s primary science instrument has opened its eyes to the universe for the first time, revealing a sea of out-of-focus stars, each spread out over many thousands of pixels. The image, which zooms into one detector and zooms again to a single star in the insets, offers a baseline the Roman team will work from to align the telescope’s optics and tune the focus. The team will soon activate the instrument’s fine-guidance system, which will mean Roman can lock onto targets. They’ll also focus the observatory, which will shrink each star’s light to appear as a crisp point, rather than the broad, donut-like features seen here (which appear as expected given the instrument’s present configuration).

WAKE UP BABE, NEW JWST IMAGE DROPPED!!!!
A star-forming region. The left two thirds of the image is blanketed in thick clouds of green and yellow gas and dust that form swirling patterns. Some of the gas is spread into thin, thready wisps. The right third of the image is the black background speckled with stars and multi-colored dots that represent distant galaxies. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the center of the scene. Each is crowned with six long spikes and two shorter spikes created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors.
