If you live in London, you benefit from the labour of a thousand years and a hundred generations that have lived here before. All they ask in return is that you spend five minutes of your day cleaning their bone juice off your shower screen, and that they intermittently wreck your plumbing.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

While we're at it, might as well share Tom Baker's perennial masterpiece.
Interview with Baker in Vortex Magazine.

Vortex:What’s your one biggest Doctor Who memory?

Baker: I remember a man stopping me in Oxford Street once, looking at me with absolute incredulity; he couldn’t believe it. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ A man in his late thirties. I said, ‘Yes’. He said, ‘Tom Baker?’ I said, ‘Yes!’ And he looked at me and in his brain he catapulted back in time and he said, ‘You know, when I was a boy, I was in a home for children; nobody wanted us, you know? It was terrible. And you made Saturday night good.’ And I went to say something to him and I could see him so close to tears that he couldn’t speak. And he shook his head as if to say, ‘Don’t go on, don’t remind me’ and he just did [a thumbs up]. Such a common thing, isn’t it, but suddenly backed up with an expression on his face through his tears that was a knighthood. It was a knighthood. Just thumbs up, meaning it was great, and thanks. It’s incredible, isn’t it? Just a gesture.

my laptop has been weird for a few days and after investigating I realised the last update weived "apple intelligence" in all my apps. Deactivating that and the bloated Siri function seems to have sorted it out. It'd be grear if companies stopped sabotaging their own products!

Me: oh wow, this shop has everything my heart desires!

Spooky shopkeeper: yes, I will warn you... every item comes with a price.

Me: yes, I know how shops work

Spooky Shopkeeper: The price may be more than you expect to pay.

Me: Yes, I know how US taxes work, too.

Shopkeeper, increasingly exasperated: I'm trying to tell you that I'm evil and offering these wares with no regard for the harm they will do!

Me, also increasingly exasperated: I know what capitalism is too goddammit

Interesting piece in the Monocle newsletter this morning, must admit it never occurred to me that military uniforms manufactured by potential adversaries could (of course) be fitted with tracking devices monocle.com/affairs/why-...

Be careful who you hire to dress your military. The wrong choice could cost the country’s security (and soft-power influence)
The old adage of keeping your friends close and your enemies closer might not apply when procuring military uniforms.

This is a very good thread on the very concept of a social contract which we very often forget and which generally tends to lead to bad political outcomes.

We’re still talking about the 70’s as if it’s a real thing when the median age in the UK is 40-43. Less than 30% of the population was vaguely of age in the 70’s. It’s just bizarre at this point. And anyway, we live in the world the 80’s shaped, not the 70’s.
