Whenever I read discourse on AI energy/water use that focuses on the "median query," I can't help but feel misled. Coding agents like Claude Code send hundreds of longer-than-median queries every session, and I run dozens of sessions a day. On my blog: www.simonpcouch.com/blog/2026-01...
A bar chart showing the electricity use of several daily activities with the subtitle "The 'typical query' is not a useful way to think about coding agents' energy use." The bar for a 'typical ChatGPT query' is not even visible. My median Claude Code session is somewhere between the average US household per minute and toasting bread for three minutes. My median day with Claude Code is something like running a dishwasher.

Four frame OSIRIS mosaic of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko acquired on September 5, 2014 between 922-937 UT. Images were taken using the OSIRIS Narrow Angle Camera's VIS_GREEN filter. At the time Rosetta was at an altitude of 41km, and Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko was at a distance of 512116000 km from the Sun.

67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko - Rosetta - From Aster Cowart (terrasabaea.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/RmwTum
Rosetta OSIRIS-Wide Angle Camera view of Comet 67P taken during a far excursion on April 11, 2015. When this image was taken, Rosetta was located about 140 km from the comet's center, at a 90 degree phase angle, allowing the spacecraft to observe a half-lit comet.

The day side of the comet experiences intense outgassing activity, forming the bright jets of gas and dust that face sunward. The material in these jets eventually spreads out into a diffuse cloud called the coma. The presence of the coma allowed Rosetta to observe the comet's shadow.

Wow! Not only can we see the disks where planets are being born around young stars, now we can sense the pull of the worlds taking shape within. Blue ovals show orbits of 31 newfound stellar companions. Bottom right: a simulation of our solar system at the same age. 🔭🧪 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed...
In this collage, we see the images of 31 baby star systems. The collage also shows our own Solar System for reference on the bottom right, as it is predicted to have looked at an age of 1 million years, with the Sun at its centre (not visible). All of the systems are centred around very young stars that have recently collapsed from vast clouds of gas and dust.

”I am not very creative and this allows me to be.” What? No it doesn’t. It actively prohibits you from being creative. It is the opposite of being creative. It’s literally a bunch of nothing. You’re better off creating your own “bad” art versus a bunch of uninspired garbage.
