Whatever you think of the argument presented here, the BTL comments are instructive. In large part they set aside housing policy issues in favour of fueling an anti-immigration binfire. I usually enjoy FT comments because you get plenty of intelligent & thoughtful contributions. But here, wowsers!

This is so true and also, we are a free country not a centrally planned economy, the government shouldn’t be dictating what people study or what jobs they have afterwards. Let people live their own lives!

I am STILL redrafting my paper on AI safety and yesterday I wrote a small section on why long and boring documents are a safety risk - tbh it seems more likely to me that the way AI will expedite the end of the world is because the important point got buried at the end of page 72 and no one read it

That Braverman tweet is very odd. If she actually believes that then it mainly suggests that she has a very tortured relationship with her own identity and that she has no idea about the history of England. The number of people who can point to centuries of "pure" English ancestry must be tiny.

And yet she can't persuade her own colleagues and government to get the eff off X 🙄
ulture Secretary Lisa Nandy branded Elon Musk’s X “disgusting” for swerving a summit about social media attacks on the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. She fumed to the Electoral Dysfunction podcast that while other firms took part, X failed to turn up or even reply to the invite. “I think it says a lot about how they see their — well, how they don’t see that they [have] a moral and social set of responsibilities to us all.”

It is incredibly important that political violence does not succeed. The far-right mob that shut down Portsmouth wanted this outcome. If the state wishes to avoid more of these actions, it needs to make sure this RNLI branch reopens *immediately*, or as close to that as humanly possible.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.
