I read the ending and I wanted to koolaid man through a wall!!
Screenshot of article which reads: To restore a functioning and
pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of
democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to
“fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response
to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success,
reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.Screenshot of article which reads: But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome.
When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for ev-
eryone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those
who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern
for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the
solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American his-
tory—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed
by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to
defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the
leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

The only reason for the death penalty is vindictiveness. 'Deterrence' repeatedly shown as myth. They say 'justice,' but really that means killing someone in response to your rage and hurt. We created civilization to rise above the worst human characteristics like vindictiveness.

There are NOT machine-made clothes. If there were, your clothes would be made in the country you live in (where the customers are), or in China (where machines are cheap). They’re made in Bangladesh or India or Indonesia because that’s where the LABOUR is cheap. Your clothes are made by people.
Joyce Carol Oates says: “This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to
different consumers.“

This is monstrous. Lethal injections are neither painless nor humane; the paralytics just make it look that way. The government should not be allowed to execute people in this way, if at all. The Supreme Court Justices who ignored new evidence to push through this order are complicit in torture.

I've been covering the death penalty in depth for a dozen years now, and few nights have been as disturbing and dispiriting as tonight. This was a moral, ethical, and legal failure on several different fronts from many different actors. It wasn't *just* SCOTUS, though they sure were a key part.
lawdork.com
After SCOTUS allowed Tennessee execution to go ahead, Tennessee botched the execution
SCOTUS, over the liberals’ dissent, cleared the way for Tennessee to kill Christa Pike. The alarming order from DC was followed by even more disturbing developments in Tennessee.

"There’s no moral or practical justification for the death penalty no matter how you do it. It’s cruel and arbitrary and it doesn’t act as a deterrent. It brutalizes the people who carry it out and traumatizes the families of victims, and the pattern of its application is openly racist."

I suppose this is a gentle call-in for each of us in positions of privilege to think through the very small things we can do to make places much safer for everyone else. it’s usually as simple as saying hey, I have a lot of privilege, and I want to be clear that I will use it on your behalf

-stop using "GMO" as scary shorthand. A dog is a genetically modified organism. So is any potato you've ever encountered. If you're concerned about seed patents, talk about seed patents. -use the word "ultraprocessed" related to food sparingly if at all, it has littl4 meaning except to connote "bad"

Screenshot of a 4-byline NYT article with this lead:
"U.S. government investigators have taken the extraordinary step of subjecting roughly 50 members of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff to polygraph tests over leaks to journalists, including about how the Iran war has created a shortage of crucial munitions, according to officials briefed on the move."
