Summer of terrifying drought and wildfire, bus drivers sweltering in shocking temperatures, everyone losing sleep unable to get cool at night and *this* is the policy they come up with? Just makes things worse and does nothing to address inequality or enable people to walk, cycle or catch a bus. 🤷‍♀️

It's great to see action starting against dangerous pavement parking. Now we need: A clear definition of what "unreasonable obstruction" means; Effective ways to enforce against obstructive and dangerous parking; Enforcement against pavements being broken by heavy vehicles. Drawing of a busy terraced street has pavement-parked cars down both sides. A long cane user is trying to get down the left pavement. A driver in a pavement-parked SUV on double yellow lines is shouting "I need to park here! You can squeeze through or go on the road!"
A powerchair user is driving down the road, while an adult and child on a side-by-side tandem are cycling towards us. A driver coming up the road is shouting "Get off the road! You'll get yourselves killed!"
A child on a small bike is riding down the right hand pavement, while a driver in a pavement-parked van shouts "Get off the pavement! You're a danger to pedestrians!"

Well said Liz Terry, leader of Reading Borough Council. Link: www.readingchronicle.co.uk/news/around/...
We know there will always be times when travelling by car is necessary, but the council’s aim is to make public transport and active travel the most attractive options for getting around Reading.

Without encouraging this shift to more sustainable transport, the number of cars on our roads will continue to grow, causing worse traffic congestion and resulting in more air pollution, which affects the health of Reading residents.

I've been looking at my photos and this is by far my favourite: children cycling with heavy goods vehicles. This is why we do it.
A pair of children cycle downhill in a red two-way red cycle track with a kerbed buffer to a road to the right. An articulated lorry with a white cab and orange body passes them. There is also a footway to the left

Everyone in a space designed for them.

Lent begins this week. And if you're a medieval English abbot that means one thing: eel-rents! At the start of Lent tenants all over England came to pay their yearly rent in eels. Hundreds of thousands of eels. But how? Why? Well...it's about sex & availability, you see. 1/7 🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of a medieval abbot. He's standing and holding a little red book, which is open in his hand. He has a long white beard, and the hair on the side of his head sweeps over his ears like the tide sweeps over a sandbar. He is bald, and there is a fine patina of light on dancing across his head. He is wearing a dark grey robe, with the hood thrown back, and next to him is the staff of his office. Behind is head is a yellow halo, so you know he's esp. holy.

He is looking down towards the book, but not actually at it. It looks like he was reading, but got distracted by something on the floor a little in front of him. His expression is calm, so it's not anything wild like a group of rabbits ritualistically sacrificing a sparrow. More like he's seen a piece of cheese, and the abbot can't quite recall when last he had cheese. Later, idly, he'll pick it up and realize that it's lint from his socks.

Meme text reads:
"I'm a medieval monk
Everything's about sex, really"

We had @mrdannyw.bsky.social showing us a terrible footway-blocking advert sign. Here's how I dealt with a well-known telecoms company on such a site. There was a phone box which said company wanted to remove because it was old, but they also made money from the advertising space.
A street with shops to the left and forecourt parking and a fairly wide footway, but a bit cluttered with a glass phone box at the rear and a bin and a lighting column to the front. There are cycle lanes on the road to the right and the lighting column has a triangular cycle warning sign.

Statement from Walk Ride GM on the comments made by Andrew Gywnne MP and local councillors about a local campaigner
Walk Ride GM is appalled by remarks that have come to light today from Andrew Gwynne MP and local councillors, in which they made light of a local campaigner being run over by a heavy goods vehicle. That elected representatives would joke about such a traumatic incident speaks volumes about the contempt some politicians have for road violence.

Every year, more than 80 cyclists are killed on British roads, people who set out on their bikes and never return home due to the unacceptable dangers they face. Dismissing or mocking those affected by road violence undermines the urgent need for action to make our streets safer.

It is disgraceful that instead of engaging with constituents advocating for safer roads, local politicians are ridiculing those who highlight the risks that cyclists face every day. We demand an apology from the local Labour Party in Greater Manchester for these comments and a commitment to treating road danger as the serious issue it is.

We ask the Secretary of State for Transport,
Heidi Alexander, to meet with Walk Ride GM
to discuss how the Government intends to address the concerns of campaign groups advocating for an end to road violence - starting with ensuring that their own MPs and councillors engage with the issue with the gravity it deserves.
