Inequality in parks starts long before they're built. Planning policies often prioritise sports provision, but older girls and others, need spaces for socialising, movement, rest and simply being outdoors too. Inclusive public spaces begin with inclusive planning.

International Women's Day celebrations also come with reflection. Teenage girls are still missing from many of our parks and public spaces. Too often spaces are designed without them in mind, leaving girls feeling like there is nothing for them to do, unwelcome, or unsafe.

Designing parks for teenage girls does not mean taking space away from others. It means noticing who is not using parks and asking why. It’s about not assuming what teenagers want. It doesn't mean spaces just for teenage girls, it’s about designing spaces that girls, and others, want to use.

What happens when you ask teenage girls what they want in parks? They tell you. They ask for places to sit together, to feel safe but not watched, to be active without competition and to connect with nature. They are not unrealistic. They are just not usually asked. Always ask. #MakeSpaceForGirls

Girls' use of parks drops after the age of 11. At a time when they should be gaining independence, many girls start to avoid parks. Why? They feel that parks aren’t for them - there is nothing to do. Also, many state they don’t feel safe.

A pioneering initiative in Stockholm involved teenage girls in redesigning parks led to a park that focused on spontaneous dance, play and free sports. A response to the fact that the site had been dominated by a football pitch used mainly by boys and men for organised sports.

Teenage girls are overlooked in planning. There isn’t enough data on how they use, or don’t use, existing parks. Our ParkWatch Report in 2023 set out to start to change this, but more data is still needed.

Councils and developers must consult with Sport England for new developments - ensuring space is allocated for sports. But there is no equivalent statutory body for ‘play’. The result - a quick tick-box approach to teenage provision which can exclude girls.

Make Space for Girls @makespaceforgirls.bsky.social · 21/03/2025
Teenage Play matters The facilities provided in parks ‘for teenagers’ are often linked to sport and ‘play’ is ignored. 90% of current users of these facilities are boys & men. Teenage ‘play’ is different to that of younger children but equally important. Play could mean more girls in parks.
