Oh I'm not disagreeing the main roads should be conveniently served by bus, I was just pondering it myself recently & this was the conclusion I came to.

It certainly needs it. Far too much of the network is on busy B roads or isolated tracks unusable after dark or just disjointed. Also hard to find out what a section you might want to use will be like in its entirety or whether it contains sections you might be unhappy with.

Summer of terrifying drought and wildfire, bus drivers sweltering in shocking temperatures, everyone losing sleep unable to get cool at night and *this* is the policy they come up with? Just makes things worse and does nothing to address inequality or enable people to walk, cycle or catch a bus. 🤷‍♀️

My theory is because the main road would be hit by large amounts of congestion making journey times unreliable

I love the waiting area above platforms 13/14 built specifically so 3 trains worth of people waiting don't get crushed onto the tracks from the narrow platforms

The pavement & cycleway are part of the carriageway. Potentially not in line with the notified works then

Obviously I could carry my axe safely insude bag, with a cover on, & only when I need to take it to do some chopping - but any restrictions need to be carefully balanced against my right to wander around everywhere swinging my axe round my head willy nilly

Yes I read that - oh dear the death camps & systematic denial of human rights to certain groups of people with protected characteristics sounds dreadful! Oh no, it's because of a fence.

16 yr olds aren't skilled in the tasks we actually do, we don't do work that is fun to watch, so have to essentially make up tasks for them & send them round talking to people.

We have a push to take work experience kids, but all the tasks we all did while on work experience don't exist any more like filing, answering the phone.

Yes that big wide road looks like it couldn't take much traffic volume anyway & clearly looks like a road where there will be people about so self enforce a low speed limit. We're all good for children to cycle in mixed traffic. The magic of hatching eh

shanwilkinson2.bsky.social @shanwilkinson2.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Nope, sad but you can't possibly be demolished all those ancient oaks & listed clocktowers that are obviously narrowing the road in that pic of a huge wide road full of hatching

I did review the evidence a few years ago. From memory: at best you got ~10cm extra passing space (tho still regularly below 1.5m anyway), at worst you got less passing space. But generally other factors were more important such as the width of the road, amount of other vehicles, speed limit etc

shanwilkinson2.bsky.social @shanwilkinson2.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
It's ok you can block both - park the car with a wheel width in the cycle lane so that becomes unusable due to risk of dooring, the rest of the car then obstructs the pavement 👌

The walking/ cycling scores are mostly theoretical because they're restricted by not having consistent data around infrastructure. On the .gov.uk users version you can see the routes they're using & some do send you walking down 60mph roads with no pavements.

It's great to see action starting against dangerous pavement parking. Now we need: A clear definition of what "unreasonable obstruction" means; Effective ways to enforce against obstructive and dangerous parking; Enforcement against pavements being broken by heavy vehicles. Drawing of a busy terraced street has pavement-parked cars down both sides. A long cane user is trying to get down the left pavement. A driver in a pavement-parked SUV on double yellow lines is shouting "I need to park here! You can squeeze through or go on the road!"
A powerchair user is driving down the road, while an adult and child on a side-by-side tandem are cycling towards us. A driver coming up the road is shouting "Get off the road! You'll get yourselves killed!"
A child on a small bike is riding down the right hand pavement, while a driver in a pavement-parked van shouts "Get off the pavement! You're a danger to pedestrians!"

I seem to remember something about HS2 running 16 carriage trains but if it switched to standard tracks to continue Birmingham to Manchester, Piccadilly can only fit the current 12 carriages so it would have to be half an HS2 train. And HS2 can't tilt so slower if on the existing line

Shipping containers are regularly stored on the motorway. Most people don't see a problem with this: they're waiting to be transported, where else are they meant to go; nobody uses the motorway anyway

Some motorways will be wide tarmac, some will be mud, some will have freight trains using them. To find out you'll have to find someone with local knowledge & ask.
