The main thing is nuance around controlled vs uncontrolled parking areas. A woman in zone 4/5 should be able to pick up a bike from a dedicated area by the station at 11pm, cycle it a mile home, and park next to where she lives as long as it's considerate. And the same in reverse in the morning.

I wonder whether London is moving towards Dutch levels of cycling (👏) but without building Dutch levels of parking infrastructure. If we want to future proof share bikes/cycling in the daily life of Londoners, the key is secure bike parking. Lots of it.

RIP to Margaret Hamilton, the engineer who led the 100-person team that wrote the software for the Apollo missions. An absolute icon. Fun fact: She started college at the University of Michigan (my alma mater! Though she transferred elsewhere).

I wanted to speak on an amendment to motion EO2 Zionism is racism at Green Party conference today, but was not called on. I’ve copied over what I would have said in the next posts. I was heartbroken this amendment fell and that the vote went against providing this protection for Jewish members.
Text of amendment 3 to motion EO2 Zionism is racism

Safeguarding Jewish party membership

This amendment is to mitigate the possiblity that this motion could be used to achive indirect discrimination against practising Jews

Add after actions 2. ADD

This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members such as (such as support for a binational state, or two state solution).

I can’t really believe this is happening in our country. And it makes me very angry people aren’t doing more to stop it. An entire group have had their civil rights gutted, and are having their lives made unliveable (especially children who are most vulnerable). And what’s anyone doing about it?

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

Heathrow has outgrown its area. Any expansion means people being moved out The road mantra “one more lane” becomes one more runway And farming off air traffic to other regional airports isn’t the answer either And as NATS have proved recently, a hiccup strains the overworked system further

I ask these questions constantly. We have decent goals, targets and strategies in London but there’s no real consequences when we expose they’re not being met. Everyone seems stuck in a soup of business as usual, budget restraint and fear that challenging car first culture will worsen division.

So much this. Quite apart from the climate crisis reasons, it makes no sense expanding an airport and generating more traffic in the surrounding area where roads are already badly congested and there’s not enough space on trains and buses for the people needing to get about locally.

‘Buses for London’ is a long-overdue return to local public ownership. If Londoners fund our buses, London should own them, with profits reinvested in better services.
Dark green graphic with white text from Caroline Russell AM. With photo bottom right caroline in pink T-shirt, navy jacket and bus in background.

“The return of local ownership of buses is long overdue. If Londoners are funding these services, London should own them, with every penny of profit reinvested to improve our public transport.

“Over the years London’s bus services have been cut and now fares are set to rise in November. The Mayor’s new bus company must mark a turning point and give Londoners the safer, greener, affordable network of buses we need to get around our city.

“Bus drivers should be at the heart of ‘Buses for London’. For years, they have fought for basic necessities like toilets, safe shift patterns and air conditioning.

“The Mayor and TfL must make this new bus company a shining example of what a publicly owned service can deliver.”

Summer of terrifying drought and wildfire, bus drivers sweltering in shocking temperatures, everyone losing sleep unable to get cool at night and *this* is the policy they come up with? Just makes things worse and does nothing to address inequality or enable people to walk, cycle or catch a bus. 🤷‍♀️
