if Elon is spending millions of dollars of his own money to push this message with paid media, what do you think he does to the black box algorithm on his platform that chooses which posts you see and which of your posts are shown to others?

I cannot say definitively that we'll never develop artificial intelligence. I strongly doubt it, based on the limits of technology and our understanding of consciousness. But I can say absolutely that an LLM will never be conscious or feel pain. It's a glorified Magic Eight Ball. That's all.

Roger Marshall charged his patients 18% annual interest on their unpaid bills. His bakery bill for $678.75 was due six years ago. At 18% interest compounded annually, the total he'd owe would be at least $1,800. Marshall just paid the bakery $1,300—far less than what his patients would owe.

They're also bleeding money competing with one another to keep scaling their models. They can't stop on their own because all it takes is one other company to keep expanding to get the edge on the others, so they need the government to come tell them to stop.

But ultimately, AI discourse broadly is about productized chatbots, LLMs, GANs, and "agents" (a vague term that generally means 'LLMs eating each other's shit'). When you try to drag random ML tools being used into it you're just carrying water for the AI industry.

The AI industry, with its wide-ranging project to muddy the waters and disinform people about such topics, is therefore actively an impediment to what we might call serious AI research. It's like we have an AI heat dome instead of an AI winter.

AI hype is absolutely a factor in research right now and is making it *harder,* not easier, to determine 1. whether an ML approach is useful in a given problem domain or results are just overblown, 2. whether someone's claimed methodology even is remotely "AI"

I'm also especially tired of seeing people posting pop-science betteridge's headlines to push this line. There's an insufferable rhetorical trick being played here—"an ML approach might be useful in this research domain" gets proxied for "the product that OpenAI or Anthropic sells is good"

I am becoming incredibly exhausted of this pattern: many people: "AI sucks!" Very Smart Person: ah but have you considered (distinct application of ML or statistical modeling that has no real relationship to what the tech industry is marketing as, and people broadly perceive as, "AI")

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

This is unsurprising because ai generated code *is* ai generated text. Code is text. People think code is different because you can test to see if it runs. But that just tells you if it runs (or passed the tests defined in the code) It does not and *cannot* tell you if it makes sense

The takeaway from Bo French suggesting Asian students are “foreigners” and the tepid GOP response is that the Trump-era Republican Party is increasingly explicit about its belief that the only good immigrants, and the only real Americans, are white. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
The Afrikaner policy is illuminating, because it proves the catch-22 facing nonwhite immigrants: If you are poor, you are a moocher, and if you are gainfully employed, you are taking a job from a hardworking American. The only way to be a good immigrant is to be white and Christian.

Bo French, who is running for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission, has taken this idea a step further, suggesting that the only way to be an American is to be white and Christian.
