I have learned that graphics programming is literally a miracle and I don’t understand how the hell people do this for a living. Just getting displays to refresh at appropriate time points if they aren’t at the same frame rate was so hard man.

My research group is well funded, and I'm terrified. All scientific labs run on slim margins, typically 12-24 months from running out of $. NIH is not reviewing proposals right now- the wave of labs shutting down is looming closer. All scientists are anticipating a major precipice. Options? 1/5

6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance. For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

It looks like the massive indirect rate cut from NIH is not legal--and will face judicial challenges. But for scale, look at your state, and knock off about 25% to see the damage.

Ultimately, if this were to stand, there would be two major effects: 1: a ton of people will lose their jobs, and 2: we will cede being the world leader in scientific research. There is no amount of foundation or philanthropic money can replace this.
