Here’s an unconventional thing I’m proud of: In both of my classes this quarter, I have students who are retaking the class because it didn’t go as they had hoped the first time. I work at a large university where many students operate anonymously — their redo could have gone unacknowledged.

My (conservative) dad got off FB and joined a social network for 50+ mostly for meeting IRL. I was excited until he goes, "I was tired of arguing with people online." Me, nervous: "... about what?" Apparently the good people of FB had been trying to convince my Dad that evolution is real. 🫠

Not stated strongly enough.
Without notifying Congress or the American people, DoD has signed an interagency agreement that could give the Department access to billions of dollars that Congress provided to NIH for critical biomedical research. These funds were provided to support research to develop treatments or cures for infectious diseases such as influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, Ebola, and other dangerous pathogens.

"That sounds cool, let's try it," is not an acceptable reason to do an experiment, I hate to say. We don't live in a world with abundant enough resources and if we're being honest with ourselves, never have.

I’ve talked to many ppl outside DC this year. Average people, when something good is under attack, want us to be honest. They would be honest. That’s what authenticity is. Trying to do deals w Kratzios and Vought isn’t honest: it’s compromising our values. And the public sees it. And it hurts us.

The U.S. is a massive funder of science. Canada does not come anywhere close. Stories about a handful of scientists get attention, but rather than "brain drain," the likely outcome if the U.S. continues its path is that there will simply be fewer scientists and less science getting done in the world
