The thing about using AI to 'clean up' your ideas when writing a paper review is that the review still reads as AI-written. And that makes it very hard for the author to be motivated to respond to it imo

Without notifying Congress or the American people, DoD has signed an interagency agreement that could give the Department access to billions of dollars that Congress provided to NIH for critical biomedical research. Loreto Javar, a green card holder who’s lived in the United States for over three decades and is being treated for Stage 4 prostate cancer, has been held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma for more than two months. 

A 76-year-old retired hotel worker who lives in Fife with his wife and daughter, Javar was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials June 23 during an interview for his U.S. citizenship application in Tukwila. He was receiving ongoing cancer treatment when he was taken into ICE custody, his family said, and has missed several medical appointments since his arrest.

Studies show that in conjunctive visual search (e.g. searching for a stimulus defined by both orientation & color), eye movements are much less guided by orientation than other features, despite the fact that eye movements *are* guided by orientation in single feature search. Why? #psychscisky

This is the reported $100,000 fee on Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows foreign students to remain for a couple years in post-graduate employment. The fee would devastate the program, making the US even less desirable as a destination for the world's best and brightest.

Teaching "AI use" in college (not related to teaching how AI is built) is silly because 1.) the tools are meant to be user friendly with minimal training and 2.) they change so often your education would be good for about a semester

Something worth noting is that a 9 gigawatt "off grid" gas plant still buys obscene volumes of gas: more than any other gas plant in the US. that itself makes gas more expensive for the power plants that are on-grid: raising costs for everyone, albeit less directly

University professors generally do not make very much relative to our training levels. Most of us, especially in STEM, could make a lot more in industry (and deal with a lot less bureaucracy). Grant money mostly goes to paying students, postdocs, and staff, and is heavily vetted and scrutinized.

The difference in utility between the use of ML to tackle big data problems that would otherwise be intractable & the use of LLMs to produce pointless slop is so large they cannot both be usefully described as “AI“. The first is making real progress, the second is dragging us towards the abyss.
