Mineral friends, I need some help. One of the minerals I purchased on Sunday is Tadzhikite-(Ce). The chemical formula looks like this from Mindat.org what is that little white square? #Minerals

“Rembrandt, Belshazzar's Feast
ca 1636-38

Medium: Oil
Support: Canvas
Size: 167.6 x 209.2 cm
Art period: Baroque
National Gallery London

The story has its origin in the Old Testament in the Book of Daniel. The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar looted the Temple in Jerusalem and brought the sacred vessels to Babylon. His son Belshazzar used these sacred vessels for a great feast.

During the feast, the hand of God appears and writes an inscription on the wall in glowing letters.

The richly brocaded cloak of Belshazzar and the inscription on the wall are painted in pure lead-tin-yellow.”

Via ColourLex

Belshazzar stands in the middle of a crowd with one hand on the table with the feast and looks over his shoulder at the disembodied hand writing the glowing yellow-gold inscription in Hebrew. The Kaunitz Sisters (Leopoldine, Caroline, and Ferdinandine)
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French
Patron Prince Wenzel von Kaunitz-Rietberg Austrian
1818

Made in graphite.

“In this rare group portrait, Ingres presents the three daughters of Austria’s ambassador to Rome, Prince Wenzel von Kaunitz-Rietberg. The young women, portrayed at ages thirteen to seventeen, cluster gracefully around the piano. The setting is likely the family music room, where the Kaunitzes often hosted private concerts. Indeed, it may have been Ingres’s passion for music that first won him an invitation to the Kaunitz residence. In this drawing, the artist—already at the height of his powers as a graphic portraitist—delicately described the sisters’ faces, framed in curls and lacy collars. Such details evoke the discreet luxury of Empire fashion and the privileged, cultured world to which these sisters belonged.”

Via The Met

Title: Loggia of the Ducal Palace, Venice
Artist: John Ruskin (British, London 1819–1900 Brantwood, Cumbria)
Date: 1849–50
Medium: Watercolor over graphite
Dimensions: Sheet: 18 1/8 × 11 7/16 in. (46 × 29 cm)
Classification: Drawings
Credit Line: Rogers Fund, 1908
Object Number: 08.227.39
Curatorial Department: Drawings and Prints

“Ruskin painstakingly depicted the shafts, capitals, and ogival lacework of Venice's most famous Gothic loggia. The red tinge to the first two shafts comes from the use of a different colored marble to mark the place from which sentences of death were proclaimed. Through the loggia, Saint Mark's Basilica is visible. Ruskin, one of the most influential voices in the nineteenth-century art world, had a lasting love for Venice; among his most influential writings was a lengthy study of its history and architecture, The Stones of Venice (1851-53). His impassioned advocacy of the Venetian Gothic was a significant source for Gothic Revival architecture.” Via The Met Title: Woman on a Sofa
Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834–1917 Paris)
Date: 1875
Medium: Oil colors freely mixed with turpentine, with touches of pastel, over graphite underdrawing, on pink paper
Dimensions: 19 1/8 x 16 3/4 in. (48.6 x 42.5 cm)
Classification: Drawings
Credit Line: H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929
Object Number: 29.100.185
Curatorial Department: European Paintings
