#FossilFriday brings canoodling Seymouria, a largely terrestrial Permian tetrapod thought to be a stem amphibian. This replica is from our collection, but the original is apparently at Carnegie. They're called the Tambach lovers, although Seymouria aggregations have been found elsewhere too. 🧪⚒️

Huh, didn’t notice the donor until just now. Guess the original's at Carnegie!

In order to celebrate #Quartz' victory in #MinCup26 a 3D model is in the making (promised during round 1). It gets more complex by the unit and failing one connection will make it glass 😖. At this point very careful steps are being taken so progress is slow. Hopefully I will finish it on Sunday! 🤞🏻

My favourite rock, in the middle of the city. A family made the choice to have a native plant xeric garden in front of their heritage home, and left the big lichen covered boulder by the boulevard alone to grow its own garden. Over the years it has covered itself with delights! #fungifriends #lichen
Lovely mealy grey Pixie cup Cladonia lichen with namesake fruiting bodies, paired with stonecrop (I think it is either Sedum rubrotinctum which has naturalized from the terrace above, or native Sedum divergens, Cascade stonecrop, looking atypically tufty after the drought.)

This photo doesn’t do justice, but one of my favorite shubs in my fall containers is the Butterfly Clerodendrum (Rotheca myricoides ‘Ugandense’): kind of shaggy habit but the flower panicles are just spectacular. They are waiting to dab backs of polIinators a lot bigger than our native bumblebees!
A shrub with light green leaves and panicles of butterfly-shaped flowers with a gentian-blue lower petal and 4 white side petals, with arching white anthers waiting to tap some big pollinator on the back. They still get pollinated by our earnest native bumblebees though, and make lots of seedy fruit that doesn’t ripen before they are brought in just before frost.
Rotheca myricoides ‘Ugandense’
(syn. Clerodendrum ugandense) is the name. I like their little white fuzzy goatees at their throats haha.

From the Fort Worth Zoo: Raani the Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) admires her baby, newly hatched. The Fort Worth Zoo had 8 (!) babies hatch this season. The population of these critically endangered crocs is less than 1000 globally, so every hatchling matters. (📷: Fort Worth Zoo)
From a 2023 Facebook post by the Fort Worth Zoo:
"HISTORY IS MADE🚨
The Zoo is thrilled to announce this monumental conservation success - the hatchings of four critically endangered gharial crocodiles. The Fort Worth Zoo is the only institution in the United States to have produced multiple offspring of this critically endangered species. (To date, only one other institution has produced a single offspring in 2016.) In the wild, it is estimated that only about 200 reproducing adults remain. We are so proud of our ectotherms team for this historic achievement!"

Researchers wrap tiny Saw-Whet Owls in cloth bags to keep them calm. Linked story is about a grassroots banding project by All About Birds / Cornell Lab of Ornithology: allaboutbirds.org/news/a-grass... Want to donate to Cornell Lab? give.birds.cornell.edu Photos: CHRIS LINDER 💛🦉 #owlsintowels
A Saw-Whet Owl is pouched in a cotton draw-string bag in the hands of a bander. She looks directly at camera with eyes yellow and wide: one eye lit from above-left, the other occluded in shadow. Feathers are muted brown with streaks of cream-white radiating from the eyes. The pouch is white with light blue stripes like the Uruguayan flag (1828-1830). In the background atop a wooden desk and out of focus is a chart with bars of yellow - likely for registering the hue of each banded owl's eyes as part of the migration research.Three identical pouches are strung from a horizontal cord, affixed with wooden clothes pegs like garments on a washing line. The pouches, I think it's safe to assume, are laden with one Saw-Whet Owl each. Some trust has been placed in the springs of the pegs, given that these little goobers typically weigh around 80 grams or 2.8 ounces. For reference that's the weight of a very small banana, or a hefty lemon, but those things rarely try to escape once put in a bag.
