For #spacetober_challenge day 2: galaxy - astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🔭 #histsci
My linocut portrait of astronomer Vera Rubin with short hair, glasses and resting her face in her hand in burgundy on a background of outer space with stars and galaxies in black with blue and pink splotches to mimic how dust bends light in space. At the base of the print is a large spiral galaxy with a plot of orbital velocity versus distance going out from its centre (so the distance axis is indeed distance from centre). There are two lines labelled “observed” which goes up from the origin and then is a pretty flat wavy line all the way across. This line marks the bottom of Rubin. Below it is a wide empty gap of visible white paper down to the second line labelled “predicted”. The Predicted line goes up from the origin to a peak where it diverges from the observed and falls smoothly back down in a gentle curve.

Congratulations, Quartz! After a decade of #MinCup, this key rock-forming mineral of optical tricks is the #MinCup26 Champion! Due to intense manipulation attempts in the final hours, the exact winning margin is still being audited. Please join us tomorrow for celebration!

Quartz was the original inspiration to start #MinCup, and (anecdotally) it's an inspiration for many kids to fall in love with the big beautiful world of minerals. #Quartz has done a lot for us! And so, the least we could do is cast our final vote for this abundant—and abundantly stunning!—mineral.

Fig. 1 of the linked paper, showing the experimental setup, along with the broad-spectrum glow of the droplet, and the narrow spike of the laser spectrum. In the experimental setup you'll note that it took two lasers (a green one and an infrared one) to get red laser light out of the salt droplet.

#Graphite aka black lead or plumbago has been mined for 100s of years, but the discovery that it is made up of 2D sheets of graphene is really recent Graphene was only theorised in 1947 and isolated, using adhesive tape (!) In 2004. (See the Wikipedia entry) vote #graphite in #MinCup26

Once again I vote #graphite, which is what French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres used to create this portrait. Plate from my copy of “Les portraits dessinés par J. A. D. Ingres" published in Paris in 1896. #MinCup26 This, btw, is how I casually dress to go grocery shopping.
A man wearing a long coat and period clothes with a top hat looking very smug and dapper.
