I heard from a former NSW guy I worked with that once Palmer Lucky told a room full of Tier 1 operators he wanted to turn into “techpriests” and they were constantly calling him a “fucking nerd” and “dweeb” and made jokes about him as soon as he left the room.

The post-1932 Keynes running on my headspace neural network calls AI boom 'a by-product of the activities of a casino' and says determination of pace&scale 'is likely to be ill-done'. He also argues that if AI lays waste to middle class and concentrates incomes, economic stagnation will follow.

But Keynes hadn't quite gotten all the way to those two insights by 1930 when he wrote 'Economic Possibilities', which Brunnermeier told the bot to rely on. For instance, he certainly didn't sound yet like the person who six years later would call for 'the euthanasia of the rentier'.
An excerpt from Keynes' 'Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren': But beware! The time for all this is not yet. For at least another hundred years we must pretend to ourselves and to every one that fair is foul and foul is fair;
for foul is useful and fair is not. Avarice and usury and precaution must be our
gods for a little longer still. For only they can lead us out of the tunnel of
economic necessity into daylight.

NYT clanker Keynes is fun to watch but unconvincing. Keynes thought he had two great insights:(1)declining marginal propensity to consume implies a demand shortfall w/o investment;(2)can't count on investment b/c it's based on vibes and vibes about vibes. This is where he'd have started with AI.

Opinion | What Would John Maynard Keynes Say About A.I.? The Keynes Bot Told Us. (Gift Article)
Nearly a century ago, Keynes predicted that technology would liberate us from work. To imagine what he would think of artificial intelligence today, a Princeton economist used A.I.

I think it is straightforwardly true that lots of people watched lots of unredacted footage from Gaza in a way that just wasn’t possible wrt Rwanda or Bosnia and it caused serious mental health issues in some and sent others spiralling into political extremism Thing is that’s bad

And to be clear, this is very much two separate complaints that come intertwined - that of monomaniacal focus on US atrocities to the exclusion of everything else, and that of Bevins, specifically, not knowing what he's talking about and ripping away the agency of local actors.

But leftists in Western countries are just much better educated about Operation Condor and Suharto, *because* of Western involvement. US involvement in Latin America and Indonesia was heinous, but there's something wrong when these are the *only* Cold War atrocities people are aware of!

And while it tends towards "Atrocity Olympics" to compare, the numbers here are objectively horrifying. The Shah's security organs killed around 3,000 people during his reign. Pinochet's government, around the same. The Dirty War disappeared 20,000. The Derg meanwhile ended roughly 500,000 lives.

You wind up with the absurd situation wherein the public knows about every US-backed right-wing dictator but has never even heard of the Derg, because no Westerners were involved. It's incredible, mind-melting chauvinism.

Bevins systematically nullifies all of this and pretends that the US had a master plan from 1965 to the 1980s that it carried out, and that rightist governments across the globe were simply puppets dancing to Langley's tune.

This is the Western leftist experience of the Cold War. It's one reason why *The Jakarta Method* is so infuriating. The US was not the sole actor in the world from 1945-1991. Local governments (Suharto, Operation Condor) were responsible for their own actions.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a woman pushing a shopping cart into a grocery store. In the baby seat of the shopping cart is an unusual orange creature with a trunk and antennae. The security guard standing in the doorway says, “ma’am, you can’t bring that in here.” Panel 2: the woman turns around and gestures at the creature. She says, “come on… he’s not hurting anyone.” Panel 3: the security guard points matter-of-factly at a sign on the wall behind him. The sign reads in bold red letters, “NO SHNOOBS. NO EXCEPTIONS.” It features a picture of an identical orange creature, the humble shnoob.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a beetle is on the phone in his house. He says, “hey man— for the party tonight… don’t bring any poop.” Panel 2: on the other end of the call is a dung beetle. He responds, “really? You sure?” Panel 3: shrugging towards another dung beetle, the first dung beetle says, “he says they’re good on poop.” Somewhat incredulous, the second dung beetle says, “I just rolled it!” He is leaning against a mostly out of frame huge ball of poop.

The Soviet Union spent twice as much on Saddam's war effort ($40 billion) than it did on the invasion of Afghanistan ($15 billion), but there's nothing there for people in the US to latch onto, so you get these weird discussions of American involvement as if it played a real role.

This is also the Iran-Iraq War. It's why uninformed Americans like making it into a "the US supplied Saddam" morality tale when the actual war was a slugfest between a Soviet client state that got in over its head and the reigning regional power that had just lost all of its arms contracts.

everyone lucked the hell out on the terror attack today where the co-pilot stabbed the pilot, passengers took down the attacker *and* there seem to have been two off-duty pilots who were able to land the plane safely. Could have been one of the worst attacks for a while otherwise.

This more than anything gives the game away that "pro-natalism" is just a ploy for white supremacism and patriarchalism. If the so-called "pro-natalists" were serious, they'd be all for radically changing society so having lots of kids is as easy and attractive as possible, but they never are!
