Honestly, a lot of the problems just have to do with greed, scaling too quickly, and not treating people with dignity. These are not necessarily unsolvable problems, but there does not appear to be much political will to solve them in the US.

Sam Seltzer-Johnston @sbseltzer.net · 19/09/2026
There are a lot of other problems downstream of AI datacenters scaling at this rate, though. Figuring out how to recycle the wastewater used to meet the cooling requirements and externalizing the operational costs to the region without bringing clear economic benefits for residents is another.

Sam Seltzer-Johnston @sbseltzer.net · 19/09/2026
The main reason it's not a very strong angle against AI is because the ecological problems with AI datacenters are mostly caused by our country being regulated away from embracing green energy and poorly regulating industrial water usage (see golf courses), not the datacenters themselves.

Sam Seltzer-Johnston @sbseltzer.net · 19/09/2026
Before AI, it was not common to pack a building with massive GPUs (with crypto being the main exception), which are much more power hungry than the hardware it takes to host databases or websites for instance.
100
Sam Seltzer-Johnston @sbseltzer.net · 19/09/2026
It's not the same infrastructure. A datacenter that's used for AI is specifically built and provisioned for it with very different hardware and resource consumption requirements.
