The all-party demolition job being done on most* UK universities is remarkable. Easily one of a languishing country’s most successful economic sectors, and yet there’s a stifling consensus in most* of British politics that its severe, government-created problems, are non-issues. *Scotland differs

Voluntary redundancy extended, *this* time with the explicit message that the now-possibly-inevitable compulsory redundancies will get smaller payoffs. Plus we’ve got a figure now that the university is trying to save, and lots of fun ways they might try to save it.

People keep forgetting that while it might be hard to understand US politics (heaven knows, it's a big part of my job and I struggle), it's a pretty easy country to follow. Anybody with a reasonable conceptual background, internet, and good English can identify a big change. For better or for worse.

I'm glad to see this. The political power of local gentry, many of them deeply embedded rent seekers in highly regulated industries (e.g. car dealers, farm equipment dealers), is IMO a big reason why rural America works the way it does.

Coastal billionaires might deserve their bad rep. But let us not forget that all over the American heartland, a multimillionaire class is consolidating its wealth at the expense of their own workers—not to mention the public at large.
