Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵
Martin Kao, CEO of defense contractor Navatek, poses next to Sen. Susan Collins for a photo. Collins is holding a model of a boat in her hands. Behind them is a large sign with the Navatek logo.

The people who go to supermarkets at weekend are a very different species to weekday shoppers. It feels like they’ve just materialised for their first day on earth in the Tesco fresh produce section. No, you can’t just stand there. Yes, that’s a carrot. Well done.

If you put ten children in a room with a single large red button that launches all nukes, it would be a genuine threat to humanity. But it doesn't mean children are a human extinction risk. It means the person who puts them near the nuke button is a human extinction risk.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Do yourself a favor and leave your phone in the other room. Pick up a book and read it uninterrupted for a long time. Pay attention and notice how good it feels not to be constantly interrupted by digital notifications. It's a miracle that we used to live like this. We don't know what we're missing.

This is per curiam, but it reads very much John Roberts. Gosh, wouldn't you know it, for procedural reasons the GOP is just going to have to have its way until an arbitrary later date, and gosh, such a shame that the clock will run out in the meantime. What could be done.

Hope you get some time outside and find some peace this weekend. 🪶
Photo of a Great Blue Heron and Wood Duck drake in a pond surrounded by lily pads by user readerwalker on Flickr. Text on graphic is the poem The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry (1934-2026) "When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free."

My kids all know this too. If a cat spits at you, you've gotta hang around doing things for another couple of minutes, even if you were about to leave. Tidy the crate, straighten blankets, mess with the litter. ANYTHING so they don't think that spitting makes humans run.

To anyone who does not live in Paris but visits the city at regular intervals (as I do), the transformation has been staggering: Paris has been reclaimed from cars. It can be done, and could be done in London too. It is all about political will and taking the risk of being unpopular - for a while.
