Although not technically my best photos, these two celebrate amazing migrations — scores of egrets (great or snowy?) gather in flight before heading south, plus ospreys from two nests prepare to fly as far as South America for the winter. #BestOfTheMonth #BirdOfTheDay #birds #birdphotography #ECK 🪶
Great egrets flock overhead in South Dartmouth MA as they gather before heading south for the winter. I have seen many snowy egrets in the area, and this could be a flock of them, but can’t make out any yellow feet in this distant and blurred photo.Ospreys, who were raised in the two nests on platforms built near the Massachusetts Audubon Allen’s Pond Wildlife Sanctuary in Dartmouth MA, gather strength In early September before their long migrations south. Amazing day at work. A lot of tasks out in our shop yard. Overcast all day, and streaming above were flocks of migrating Turkey Vultures, with a few assorted raptors: Sharp-shinned Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Northern Harrier. I couldn’t contain my excitement and kept looking up.

For #FrogFriday, a Spotted Whipping Frog (Polypedates maculatus), from Goa province in western India. Why are they called whipping frogs? The answer is in the ALT text. #herps #frogs #NaturePhotography 🌿
Angled down side image of a frog perched on a green leaf, and facing left. The frog's ground color is a golden brown, overlaid with many small spots and blotches of darker brown. The eye is large, the iris is coppery in color, and the pupil is dark and horizontally elliptical. These frogs are "foam nesters" - while in amplexus, mating pairs position themselves on leaves or branches over water. They exude sticky secretions that is "whipped" into a foam, using their hind limbs. The foam hardens and encases the fertilized eggs, keeping them moist while protecting them from predators while the larvae develop. The next heavy rain disintegrates the foam nest, and washing the tadpoles into the water below.

My Maximilian (I think) sunflowers have struggled a bit this year, but they're looking pretty good now and since they didn't grow nearly as tall as in previous years (easily 10 ft), they are not falling over, so far. Much respect to this plant.
Bright yellow Maximilian sunflowers from a dirty downstairs window. From a website: From an ecological standpoint, Maximilian Sunflower is extraordinarily valuable. Its late-season bloom provides critical nectar and pollen when most other flowers have finished, supporting large numbers of native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators before winter. The abundant seeds
nourish finches, sparrows, juncos, and many other seed-eating birds throughout fall and winter. The tall stems provide nesting structure and overwintering habitat for native bees and beneficial insects. And the dense rhizome system is exceptionally effective at stabilizing soil and suppressing
weeds — making it an excellent choice for erosion control and prairie restoration.Miner bee on a Maximilian sunflower
