Raymond Carver, “The Best Time of the Day”
Cool summer nights.
Windows open.
Lamps burning.
Fruit in the bowl.
And your head on my shoulder.
These the happiest moments in the day.

Next to the early morning hours,
of course. And the time
just before lunch.
And the afternoon, and
early evening hours.
But I do love

these summer nights.
Even more, I think,
than those other times.
The work finished for the day.
And no one who can reach us now.
Or ever.

What Draws Us Together

When we come together, what shapes
the space around, defines the ground between us?
Which hand traces the outline of a body?

If we are together, what gesture
completes the picture? Whose perception fills in
missing lines, suggesting a profile?

If we stand together, must unity resolve
the multiplicity of our infinite fracture?
What proportion is each figure?

When we go together, what is the simple form we make?
Who fits our edges snugly, composing a whole?
Whose eye searches the landscape for a focal point?

CATTLE NEAR BEAVER BROOK

Cattle wander to the barbed edge of the pasture,
Their scruffed autumn coats as thick as sofa stuffing.
White-faced large calm heads chew and stare at me.
A low sun slathers them in palomino light.

Swallows transmit themselves through air—
The wings pump silence. Glossy caucusing crows,
delegates from the corn lobby, break for their districts.
All at the same time, the cattle blink and turn.

Ada Limón, “Bald Eagles in a Field”
She was almost gone at that point,
enough so we could start to make plans.

Bright for a February near Fishtown,
Skagit Bay another sun on the earth

shining upward. On our way for groceries,
we saw one eagle in a field, then another.

I had never seen two bald eagles together
like that, and it felt like a sign, something

that would shift things forever, but it wasn’t
really, it was just a moment, dad and daughter

pulled over in the car, silent and breathing
for a singular instance before all we knew

took flight.

Waning East
The day comes perishing, inevitable on the waning east, settling hands dark and lonely over ground roots and whittling light away. Still in the awakening, growing fluent in meditation, lightwarm creatures giving way to a tender dusk. Among dry clustered forms, solemn in their ritual shadows, hoarding insects filter chorales, revised for later praise. At the turning of the stream,

My favorite page from Kathleen Norris’s Dakota— “I did not know about rain, that it could come too hard, too soft, too hot, too cold, too early, too late.”
RAIN
Above all, it is a land in serious need of rain.
- WILLIAM C. SHERMAN, Plains Folk
UNTIL I MOVED to western South Dakota, I did not know
about rain, that it could come too hard, too soft, too hot, too cold, too early, too late. That there could be too little at the right time, too much at the wrong time, and vice versa.
I did not know that a light rain coming at the end of a hot afternoon, with the temperature at 100 degrees or more, can literally burn wheat, steaming it on the stalk so it's not worth harvesting.
I had not seen a long, slow rain come at harvest, making grain lying in the swath begin to sprout again, ruining it as a cash crop.
Until i had seen a few violent hailstorms and replaced the shingles on our roof twice in five years, I had forgotten why my grandmother had screens made of chicken wire for all the windows on the west side of her house.
I had not seen the whimsy of wind, rain, and hail; a path in a wheatfield as if a drunken giant had stumbled through, leaving footprints here and there. I had not seen hail fall from a clear blue sky. I had not tasted horizontal rain, flung by powerful winds.

Jack Gilbert, from “Horses at Midnight Without a Moon”
Our heart wanders lost in the dark woods.
Our dream wrestles in the castle of doubt.
But there's music in us. Hope is pushed down
but the angel flies up again taking us with her.
The summer mornings begin inch by inch
while we sleep, and walk with us later
as long-legged beauty through
the dirty streets. It is no surprise
that danger and suffering surround us.
What astonishes is the singing.
