The penultimate issue of my literary magazine is almost here. I gave Stanchion over 6 years of my life, but it's just about time to say goodbye to the beautiful thing I started so I could be the proverbial utilitarian structure that allows the light of others to shine.

Once I saw an editor bragging that one of the stories they published for their zine got into a big anthology. They didn't mention the author or the story. Two of us asked and he ignored us. I don't send to that journal anymore. Every day, people fawn all over him. #litcommunity, #writerslife

Clarence Thomas says the 14th Amendment should be read narrowly because it was written for formerly enslaved people. By that logic, the 2nd Amendment was written for muskets, not AR-15s. Funny how that kind of originalism only shows up when it's convenient.

Lost Couplet

When I die, let my body be donated to silence.
The final noise: when I'm clothed in ground.

Sparrows asleep inside a glass violin.
Bells with their throats cut.

The song went: plenty, plenty. I've plenty of bones.

Jack Spicer, from “A Diamond” A Translation for Robert Jones
A diamond
Is there
At the heart of the moon or the branches or my nakedness
And there is nothing in the universe like diamond
Nothing in the whole mind.

The poem is a seagull resting on a pier at the end of the ocean.

A dog howls at the moon
A dog howls at the branches
A dog howls at the nakedness
A dog howling with pure mind.

I ask for the poem to be as pure as a seagull’s belly.

Kay Ryan, “All Your Horses”
Say when rain
cannot make
you more wet
or a certain
thought can’t
deepen and yet
you think it again:
you have lost
count. A larger
amount is
no longer a
larger amount.
There has been
a collapse; perhaps
in the night.
Like a rupture
in water (which
can’t rupture
of course). All
your horses
broken out with
all your horses.

My new poem in the summer issue of @triquarterlymag.bsky.social with thx to the editors!
A Question of Archives
Let us not begin at the beginning, nor even at the archive, Derrida says.
As when I had a child atter miscarrying, 1 began to see my fathe: everywhere. The deer he'd shot in the woods the winter before he died
My mind, Decembering the snow, the sun, the cold.
A four-day-long migraine.
The strange unabsence that is also unpresence. A shadow tense: the winter trees.
Too often lately, I sleep on the bathroom floor. Hormones laced with swords. All ridding riddled with sweat and nausea and pain.
My father, crving in my sleep as we sit in a truck near an outdoor pooll Neither of us speaks or moves. Night, like memory, yields to time.
It time is our greatest currency, that I might rearrange the past as the lodgepole pines rearrange the surface of water.
ly father, crying near the woods instead. The trees' shadows, kneelin a the blood of a dees
I he lost object is not an object at all, according to Lacan.
A dead man, a miscarriage. Lost addresses. Tell me again how anxiety has no object?
How contagious our despair. The Werther Effect: the friend before me, the one after. We were only children. Unlike water, the pines. My long attachments.
Still, I don't know how to endure. I don't know how not to.
The historical truth vs. the material truth. Certain pasts will disappear within and without language, our only witness.
My father, crying in the open field of my mind. Unable to find his way home.
Adorno insists that the living rescue the dead through memory.
I am my father's murderer. I am my father's savior. I am neither
Say child in place of father.
What is a truth if not a wish
to be held
"he way my father carried himself through the world. The way he carried m when I could still be carried. The way a river carries-
I want to be held like that. Years and years ago.
That water, white-cold as it moves. The current, its currencies. Withheld from being able to stop or go back for anyone.
The way a parent moves when withholding a world that they don't want a…

Soft Machinery

Drowned lilies in a basin behind chapel doors.
The feeling of a snail crawling down the throat.

Of history, is it the metaphor or the body that dies?
The float of seasons, a widening orbit, the book older and stranger.

Standard are the ways we hurt each other, however slowly it may make us.

she catches at my edges, lifts me to noticing. she carries crow to where he needs to go, his crackled call. she sings the grey center of a sunlit cloud, leans into green. without her, no one would dance. the finches would still, unruffled. she reminds you to move, even if it is only with the wings of your heart. she guides the song of the boy on his bicycle, te quiero te quiero. the crow again, a caw of lament, a drum in throat. have you ever swallowed gold, the thread of autumn light? the rustle touch of grass, the sound of ocean where there is none. within her touch, the memory of other times she surrounded. a montana plain haunted by ghost shadow. the cornish coast near tintagel. the cliffs of west maui, carrying wave crash over black rock. how she is everywhere, holding you, summoning you elsewhere, raging at you. once, she showed you how she could miracle 80 degrees and sun spears into 20 degrees and a brutal blue snow cloud, erasing everything. she carries the voices of the lost to their mothers, carries the cries of the grieving back to spirit walkers. exhales seeds across a continent, hearts across oceans. the coyote's split arc of howl in the night.fade
Jill Kitchen
the goldfinches have gone. the rise and fall, rise and fall of their flight. sunflowers have lost their color, leaning brown and petal-less into
the sudden lesser light of late afternoon. every creature seems to be fighting against winter's sure arrival-the jays and red-breasted finch arguing
with a squirrel over the last of the scattered seeds, a cottontail worrying over sweet remnants of flesh left on windfall cores from the apple tree. the same tree
a bearshape crunches in the almost-midnight dark, the pull and crackle of leaves on the branch, the persistent snap of teeth breaking through apple skin.
even your child hungers and wanes with each moment's loss of light. even you are fading, your shadow become the soft murmurs of leaf shapes,
the sun sighing small geometries in between. it isn't only this season that pulls you away. this story has been spinning for years, since
your absence of breath to become mother. since even before, when you began to fear the predators who might find you the day your own skin
shook you unconscious and left you on a taxi floor, the ghost songs of sirens closing in.
