Blessing

The winter light, thin as tracing paper:
a tally of who leaves, who stays, who lingers.

These are the things people do.
We circle our own bewilderment a million times,

river water smoothing out stones with patience.
And if we could stay like that, what would it mean?

No sorrow. No velvet. No aftermath.
No waiting for technique to catch up to will.

Like banyans grow by strangling another tree
to death, there's a limit to closeness.

We gather syllables in a clay bowl, to offer.
Nothing survives but the gesture.
