After Rilke’s sudden death at the end of 1926, Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva wrote two works addressed to Rilke that sit among the great European modernist poems. You can read my translations of them and a creative essay in Tsvetaeva ‘27 @pavilionpoetry.bsky.social

Osip Mandelstam, “Nowhere Air” Like water trickling from the highest ice Its bracing ache, its brain-shard sweetness, Its nowhere air of utter now, So my sigh has lost its source, And I live by meanings I cannot comprehend, For every instant I must taste the instant that I end. [Tr. C Wiman]

Like water trickling from the highest ice
Its bracing ache, its brain-shard sweetness,
Its nowhere air of utter now,

So my sigh has lost its source,
And I live by meanings I cannot comprehend,
For every instant I must taste the instant that I end.

New little collage (from a series using fragment cut from a 1930s children’s English language textbook). 4” x 4” on canvas panel.
Collage assembled from mulberry paper, magazine and catalogue scraps in hues of green and teal with cranberry at the center. A little gold paint over some elements. The phrase “nearly everyone lives in two worlds” cut from a children’s textbook is included.

Lovers, if they knew how, might utter strange, marvelous words in the night air. For it seems that everything hides us. Look: trees do exist; the houses that we live in still stand. We alone fly past all things, as fugitive as the wind. bit of Second Duino Elegy, Rilke tr Mitchell #poetrysunday +1

Our 2026 WWB–Academy of American Poets #NationalTranslationMonth series continues with Jenny Tunedal’s mournful elegy “Older Electra,” translated from Swedish by Johannes Göransson. Read this poem of birdsong, grief, and illusory escape, here: wordswithoutborders.org/read/article...
The background is a powder blue textured canvas. On the right, a portion of a dark, melancholic painting of a forest with snow on the ground. Black text at the top reads “National Translation Month,” with the WWB logo in black and the Academy of American Poets logo in black and bright blue below this. Remaining black text reads:

Wislawa Szymborska

They must have been different once,
fire and water, miles apart,
robbing and giving in desire,
that assault on one another’s otherness.
Embracing, they appropriated and expropriated each other
for so long
that only air was left within their arms,
transparent as if after lightning.

Soft Machinery

Drowned lilies in a basin behind chapel doors.
The feeling of a snail crawling down the throat.

Of history, is it the metaphor or the body that dies?
The float of seasons, a widening orbit, the book older and stranger.

Standard are the ways we hurt each other, however slowly it may make us.

Louise Glück, from “Mother and Child”
Louise Glück, from “Mother and Child”

We’re all dreamers; we don’t know who we are.

Some machine made us; machine of the world, the constricting family.
Then back to the world, polished by soft whips.

We dream; we don’t remember.

Machine of the family: dark fur, forests of the mother’s body.
Machine of the mother: white city inside her.

And before that: earth and water.
Moss between rocks, pieces of leaves and grass.

And before, cells in a great darkness.
And before that, the veiled world.

Always returning to Rilke (from Advent, in the introduction to Poems of Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Jessie Lemont)
Text:

That is longing: To dwell in the flux of things.
To have no home in the present.
And these are wishes: gentle dialogues
Of the poor hours with eternity.
