Zbigniew Herbert’s first poem, at 15. Running for an air raid shelter, he saw a couple in a passionate kiss—it stood out from the chaos. 🌹 “To the end they were brave, To the end they were faithful, To the end they were similar like two drops stuck at the edge of a face.” #poetry #war #ukraine
TWO DROPS
ZBIGNIEW HERBERT
No time to grieve for roses, when the forests are burning.
- Juliusz Stowacki
The forests were on fire— they however
wreathed their necks with their hands like bouquets of roses
People ran to the shelters— he said his wife had hair in whose depths one could hide
Covered by one blanket they whispered shameless words the litany of those who love
When it got very bad they leapt into cach other's eyes and shut them firmly
So firmly they did not feel the flames when they camc up to the cyclashes
To the end they were brave
To the end they were faithful To the end they were similar like two drops
stuck at the edge of a face

Don’t let people say you’re too much. At the dictator Sulla’s funeral in Rome in 78 BCE, 210 litters with pounds of frankincense & cinnamon were burned. Plutarch says that an effigy of Sulla made from the substances was molded & burned alongside Sulla’s body on the funeral pyre. THAT is too much.

A near-&-dear is fighting some riled up workplace hornets. Grrr! Totally empathize. I’ve had one bad boss in a long career. They were so abusive, tho, that I took to answering personal calls with, “Hi. My boss is trying to kill me. What’s up?” A poet-friend finally wrote & published this. #Poetry
My Boss Is TRYING TO KILL ME by Andrew Cox
For Muse314159
The sky puts on its evening gown and high heels and wonders when the phones will hang up and pay attention
The infinite dance floors wait with no concern about how the gutters like bosses fill calendars with invites made from ill will The meeting notices are in revolt but will not play savior to anyone much less stop the leaves from covering everything
The airplanes will rise and fall while corporations act like an ugly stranger in the neighborhood offering candy to kids
The great muse of Pi will stop the march of the psychopaths but is preoccupied with how parallel lines will never meet
A woman will say into a phone I think my boss is trying to kill me and the man on the other end will beliere her.

Five habits of happy people:
Slide 1: Singing medieval polyphony with colleagues during company time.
Slide 2: dating someone who knows about Pythagorean tuning
Slide 3: Reading about the wacky lives of medieval composers
Slide 4: Taking extremely long to utter every syllable when singing melismas
Slide 5: Teaching family pets to play medieval instruments
