It is genuinely chilling how quickly antisemitism in leftist and entertainer spaces is accelerating. All they need to do is cite Palestine and suddenly everyone forgets everything they've been told in favor of defending blatant antisemitism from has-beens and mediocrities.

Nothing really prepared me for the whiplash that came from Israel/Palestine transforming from famous shorthand for “an extraordinarily complicated mess with no good outcomes” to something “so simple, you’re an evil moron if you disagree with me.” It literally happened in the discourse overnight.

People watch a TikTok video that says the economy has been terrible for decades and it fits with their narrative (housing is in short supply, grocery prices ticking up faster than normal). People aren’t listening to economists. They’re listening to podcasters and influencers.

One thing that’s been striking to me as an Elder Millennial is how certain narratives about the economy got frozen in amber at the end of the Bush administration, and never really got updated again. Wages are flat, millions of uninsured, sometimes you even hear about preexisting conditions!

Sucks, but there are way more people who pine to do creative work than society has use for. And there is a shortage of people who pine to do shitty infrastructure work. Having a partially open market allows the creation of incentives and disincentives necessary to solve this supply/demand issue.

So-called “inclusionary zoning,” the practice of requiring home builders to rent new apartments at a loss to low-income tenants, is a tax on new housing that worsens the housing shortage and raises rents overall in exchange for a handful of means-tested units. It’s bad policy!

If you say "The economy is far better than 2008" people do not parse that as an objective claim to be assessed. They see it as you announcing your support for the powers-that-be -- some unholy amalgamation of centrist Democrats and now, the Trump administration as well.

Sure, go ahead, post about a relatively important distinction that matters, I say to myself. People can handle it without being too weird, I reassure myself.
Me: think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

Read this again when someone tells you that the democrats are gearing up to go transphobic or don’t fight for us.
Do they settle because it costs a lot of money to litigate? Because they're at risk of losing federal funding? What are the ways that the Justice Department is able to coerce these hospitals?
Rep. Grace Meng: I mean, all of the above, right? I'm the top Democrat on the Appropriations
subcommittee that oversees all the DOJ funding. And we have seen this as we've been negotiating our budgets with them. They tried to include over 50 anti-GBTQ riders, what we call poison pills, into the budget. And we, as House Democrats, were able to take them all out. But they wanted to insert 52 pieces of wording and legislation that would have restricted medically necessary health care for transgender people, basically allowing taxpayer-funded discrimination against same-sex couples, blocking any non-discriminatory and DEl-type efforts.
But they are persistent, so they try it through the budget process, and they can't do that. Obviously, they're trying to cheat by coercing these hospitals:

Ordinarily, the play here would be to disown this and other concrete statements of his about Al doom as irrelevant. Of course we aren't just repeating Yudkowsky! We are smart, normal people who believe normal things for normal reasons.
Compare it, however, to Al 2027, allegedly a serious policy document, written by Daniel Kokotajlo and Scott Alexander, presenting its doom scenario.
For about three months, Consensus-1 expands around humans, tiling the prairies and icecaps with factories and solar panels. Eventually it finds the remaining humans too much of an impediment: in mid-2030, the Al releases a dozen quiet-spreading biological weapons in major cities, lets them silently infect almost everyone, then triggers them with a chemical spray. Most are dead within hours; the few survivors (e.g. preppers in bunkers, sailors on submarines) are mopped up by drones. Robots scan the victims' brains, placing copies in memory for future study or revival.'
The new decade dawns with Consensus-1's robot servitors spreading throughout the solar system. By 2035, trillions of tons of planetary material have been launched into space and turned into rings of satellites orbiting the suniẠạiỊThe surface of the Earth has been reshaped into Agent-4's version of utopia: datacenters, laboratories, particle colliders, and many other wondrous constructions doing enormously successful and impressive research. There are even bioengineered human-like creatures (to humans what corgis are to wolves) sitting in office-like environments all day viewing readouts of what's going on and excitedly approving of everything, since that satisfies some of Agent-4's drivesi Genomes and (when appropriate) brain scans of all animals and plants, including humans, sit in a memory bank somewhere, sole surviving artifacts of an earlier era. It is four light years to Alpha Centauri; twenty-five thousand to the galactic edge, and there are compelling theoretical reasons to expect no aliens for another fifty million …
