You can also see exactly when this happened by watching Congress’ relationship with the courts go from a sophisticated dialectic in tech policy cases (e.g., Turner I-II) straight into the toilet by the time the Internet takes off. Congress hasn’t passed comprehensive tech legislation since 1998.

Although I encountered him in a case that brings to mind the adage "a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client," I must admit that Mr. Murphy's decision to name his firm Murphy's Law is extremely good. (Bonus Q: does the double entendre mean it's not "primarily merely a surname"?)

I always found it interesting that Bezos required Amazon staff to write 6-page memos for meetings and then set aside time in those meetings for people to read the memos. I was curious how that has fared in the AI era and I guess it has not fared well. observer.co.uk/news/columni...
“Writing is thinking,” said one veteran. “That was the whole point of Amazon’s writing culture. I can’t tell you how many times I changed my mind when writing a narrative. And even when I didn’t, my arguments were more precise for having written them down. Now we have chatbots writing six-pagers to be summarised by other chatbots.”

We should try having some group of people who get to vote on approving agency heads like OMB director.

Sen. Susan Collins

@SenatorCollins
Without warning or consultation, Congress just received an $810 million package of pocket rescissions from the Administration. This is the most recent attempt by this Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to undermine Congress’s Constitutional power of the purse.

This move shows that OMB intentionally withheld these funds for months to execute this unlawful cancellation of appropriations that were approved on a bipartisan basis and signed into law.

Not only is the delay itself an impoundment that was not reported to Congress, but also it is a usurpation of Congress’s appropriations powers. OMB is an agency of the executive branch. It does not get to decide which programs are worth funding.

The independent Government Accountability Office has concluded that pocket rescissions are unlawful and not permitted by the Impoundment Control Act. Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law.

I will work with my colleagues to address these illegal actions.

A defining characteristic of speech rights, as compared with say the right to worship or due process, is they very often intersect and compete with the speech rights of others. When an outlet focuses on one side of this equation, and not the other, it’s usually because they’ve chosen a side.
