Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

“It’s Time”: Virginians Will Decide Whether to Repeal Jim Crow-Era Lifetime Ban on Voting - Bolts
Voters will decide this year whether to end Virginia’s uniquely harsh felony disenfranchisement rules. They'll also vote on abortion, gay marriage, and redistricting.

Rs want credit for expressing misgivings and reservations, when some of them could have stopped the madness earlier and chose, repeatedly, to please their friends, or their donors, or their primary voters, instead.

Please remember that for every VE Schwab and Stephen King, there are a lot of banned Black, queer, and POC writers you've never heard of, to whom it is maybe not a badge of honor but a denial of their voice. Being banned is not a marketing opportunity, unless one is already rich.

thread. ideally literature profs should teach work we love, combined with work we consider historically important or foundational to the work we love. (I do not pretend to tell history profs what to do.)

A pretty key & funny theme in Rome worship is that the statues look very austere and white, ie “classical”. And arguably “white” in racial sense, tho I think that’s overstated. But most were originally painted. And they looked very different, more florid and certainly to modern eyes more eastern.
