There appears to be no Episcopal Bar Association. That surprises me considering how many Episcopalians (historically and currently) are attorneys, judges, legislators, etc. There are like ten attorneys at my parish alone.

Renee Good's family filed two lawsuits today. The first, against, USG, is a standard wrongful death. The second is a Klan Act lawsuit against Jonathan Ross, AND STEPHEN MILLER and Greg Bovino. It names Nick Shirley and Christopher Rufo as non-party co-conspirators for their racist propaganda.
44. At all relevant times, Defendants Ross, Miller, Noem, Lyons, Homan,
Bovino, and the John Doe Federal Agents acted under color of federal law and within the
scope of a joint enterprise with the private actors described below. Defendant
Lewandowski acted in part under color of federal law and in part, as alleged below, as a
private person, his federal status having been limited to a temporary part-time designation
that his conduct exceeded. Shirley, Rufo, and Ben Bergquam, and the other non-party
private actors described below, agreed to and in fact participated in the conspiracy alleged
here: each acted in concert with, and with the knowledge and encouragement of, federal
officials.

What's funny (to me) about this is that this is a problem entirely of their own making and they could generate a tremendous amount of goodwill if they took the always-available legislative path to fix the problem themselves.

We review the use of "public religion" over the past few decades, noting divergent diagnoses, sources, and applications. Our proposal? Stop using the phrase "public religion" Instead, analyze empirical data along three dimensions: -politicized religion -civic religion -public religious culture

As Linda Greenhouse writes, St. Mary v Roy is a case asking a fundamental question about religious freedom: “Equality or preference?” She links my article with @nelsontebbe.bsky.social and @richschragger.bsky.social, arguing that the Court is committed to the latter — a doctrine of preference.

The hype and excitement among the legal AI boosters is starting to wear off it seems. Seeing a lot more LinkedIn posts like this of late.
I always thought that the rise of Al in law would be a great thing. I now think I may have been wrong.

Somewhere this morning a trainee is doing a first-pass document review that an Al could have finished before they got their coat off.
Everyone agrees this is progress. I'm not sure it is.

The grunt work is how lawyers learn. You read four hundred bad contracts and somewhere around number three hundred you start spotting the one that's wrong before you can explain why. Nobody taught you that. You got it from the volume.

Take the volume away and you still get a qualified lawyer at the other end. You just get one who never built the instinct, and who now has to supervise a machine doing a job they've never done themselves.
Firms are automating the bottom of the pyramid and assuming the top will look after itself.

I don't think it will. I think in about ten years we find out what a generation of lawyers who never did the boring bit actually looks like.

Attended a lovely Red Mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville today. Thanks to the Louisville Archdiocese for praying for all those who are called to service in the judicial branch.
A LAWYER'S PRAYER TO ST. THOMAS MORE:

Pray that, for the glory of God and in the pursuit of His justice, I may be trustworthy with confidences, keen in study, accurate in analysis, correct in conclusion, able in argument, loyal to clients, honest with all, courteous to adversaries, ever attentive to conscience.

Sit with me at my desk and listen with me to my clients' tales.
Read with me in my library and stand always beside me so that today I shall not, to win a point, lose my soul.

Pray that my family may find in me what yours found in you: friendship and courage, cheerfulness and charity, diligence in duties, counsel in adversity, patience in pain— their good servant, but God's first.
Amen.
