The City of Seattle is shutting down a cafe’s outdoor deck because the code says any outdoor dining must be 50’ away from a residential property due to noise concerns Funny, we shove all housing growth on the loudest roads our city has. I guess that noise is fine?

The rate of growth in state and local spending in Washington versus the national average is very similar across the past 30 years. Our level is 5–10% higher than the US average, which is reasonable given the higher cost of living and higher median salaries here.

Rich people paid for a study to show their taxes were too high and SURPRISE, what they published was misleading and served its purpose. City taxes as a percentage of GDP 2005: 1.35% 2013: 1.24% 2025: 1.24% Taxes are flat from 2013, and down from 2005, even though we are hella richer as a state.

Report: Taxes in Seattle have grown 5 times faster than population
The report found that Seattle taxes grew 172% between 2013 and 2025, compared with 31% population growth and 23% employment growth.

And in Seattle, rich corporatists are now owners or co-owners of the 1. Seattle Times (and the defunct Post-Intelligencer) 2. The Stranger. and 3. KOMO is owned by the right-wing Sinclair Network. 4. KING5 is owned by the right-wing Nexstar Group. See the problem?

Another entry for the "impact fee nexus studies are bullshit" file! Student enrollment at LA Unified has fallen for 24 years straight, ~48%. And yet! We have an impact fee because: "As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the student population."
A screenshot from the Los Angeles Unified School District 2026 School Impact Fee Justification Study. The text reads: "Education Code Section 17620 allows school districts to assess fees on new residential and
commercial construction within their respective boundaries. These fees can be collected without
special city or county approval, to fund the construction of school facilities necessitated by the
impact of residential and commercial development activity. In addition, these fees can also be used
to fund the reconstruction of school facilities to accommodate students generated from new
development projects. Fees are collected immediately prior to the time of the issuance of a building
permit by the City or the County.
As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the
student population. Because of the high cost associated with constructing school facilities and the
District’s limited budget, outside funding sources are required for future school construction. State
and local funding sources for the construction and/or reconstruction of school facilities are limited."

The Danes are so so far ahead of us on this stuff. Copenhagen and Aarhus are unbelievably comfortable cities in every last corner. And the little towns everywhere are also cute, compact, walkable and safe.

It’s hard to explain but what Bob said is actually so much worse than how it appears. He first dramatically insulted affordable housing, then claimed that social housing dollars can just go to Office of Housing instead, AND then he implied oh well, all of that money should just go to cops anyway
